With OSU’s #Pac12AfterDark matchup with Minnesota just three days away, the Beavers are trying to fine tune their game plan to be a more well-rounded squad as a quality Big-10 team comes to Corvallis. BeaversEdge has all the coverage from OSU’s practice today, and here are the most newsworthy practice nuggets from Brenden Slaughter.

-Manase Hungalu was back practicing with the first unit today in a red no-contact jersey. Given how important Hungalu is to the Beavers defense, it’s a good sign to see him going through practice with very few restrictions. Hungalu didn’t appear to be showing any signs of his bruised hip during practice today as he was flying all over the field, making several nice plays in run defense and pass coverage.

-The Beavers first team defense is still struggling with getting consistent stops in the redzone. Several times, the scout team offense waltzed into the end-zone with very little resistance.

-In other injury news, Titus Failauga didn’t practice in the open session. We was dressed but was wearing a brace around his right leg.

-Darell Garretson was throwing the ball more than he has been in the past several practices. Usually we’ve seen Garretson be the mobile option where he doesn’t throw very much, but today was the exception as Garretson was tossing the ball all over the field.

-The music was loud and the Beavers were amped up inside the Truax Center today. OSU was inside today, most likely due to air quality, and they weren’t shy about dancing around and having some fun today. Bruno Mars' 24K Magic and Kendrick Lamar’s Humble were the two most popular tracks on the day where many players on the sideline were showcasing their dance moves. Whether or not they were good dance moves are up for debate. It was good to see the Beavers have some fun and let loose a little bit during practice today as the Beavers have been under a lot of stress recently.

-Trevorris Johnson and Artavis Pierce were getting a healthy amount of reps with the first team offense and Jake Luton today. The offense is on the opposite side of the Truax Center, so we didn’t get a good look at a lot of the offense today, but I did see both guys work on designed carries and RPO’s. Johnson is continuing to impress me with his tenacity and playmaking ability both as a runner and a receiver. If he continues to play this well, the Beavers might have to find a way to get him more involved in the offensive gameplan.

-Kyle White is continuing to impress as a cornerback this season, as he was running with the 1’s today. He’s really beginning to grow as a cornerback after starting his career off as a running back and have been impressed with his ability to make plays in space.

-Shawn Wilson and David Morris were also getting a healthy amount of reps with the 1st team as well today. We haven’t seen much of Wilson lately, but he did make some nice plays today. For those wondering about Jay Irvine, he was running with the second unit today. I’ve been extremely impressed with Morris and his ability to pick up the playbook in such a short amount of time.

-Another freshman who is looking better and better as the days go on is Kesi Ah-Hoy. He’s been playing very well in practice and has impressed the coaches with his tenacity and ability to make plays in space. When I caught up with him earlier today, he noted that his quick learning curve has been because of the great mentors in the linebacking corps.

-Jake Luton was keeping the ball on the zone-read today. We haven’t seen Luton run the ball much this season, as the Beavers have left that role to Darell Garretson but Luton can run and run well when necessary and today he was able to take a zone-read pull into the end-zone.

-The Beaver wide receivers as a hole struggled with hanging onto the ball today. Isaiah Hodgins and Jordan Villamin both had drops that should have been routine plays. Drops happen as that is football, but if Luton puts the ball in between the numbers, the Beaver receivers need to make a play for their QB.

-Today’s highlight came from 11-on-11 work when the 1st team offense went up against the 1st team defense. Jake Luton hit Noah Togiai on a post over the middle that Togiai was able to take to the house.
