The Oregon State football team hit the field for their ninth spring practice of the 2023 spring on a wet, cold Tuesday in Corvallis. Here’s everything that happened from the Prothro practice fields.
FIRST TEAM OFFENSE
QB: DJ Uiagalelei
RB: Damien Martinez
TE: Jake Overman
WR: John Dunmore
WR: Silas Bolden
WR: Trevor Pope
LT: Taliese Fuaga
LG: Tanner Miller
C: Jake Levengood
RG: Heneli Bloomfield
RT: Tyler Morano
SECOND TEAM OFFENSE
QB: Ben Gulbranson
RB: Jam Griffin
TE: Jermaine Terry
WR: Trent Walker
WR: Jeremiah Noga
WR: Rweha Munyagi Jr.
LT: Jacob Strand
LG: Luka Vincic
C: Dylan Lopez
RG: Nathan Elu
RT: Grant Starck
- Aidan Chiles put an exclamation point on practice during the final live session of the day. He hung in the pocket amongst the pass rush, stepped up, and lobbed a perfect rainbow 40 yards down the far sideline to Trent Walker for a touchdown. Walker redeemed himself from a drop on a similar throw from Chiles earlier in practice, a play where Chiles rolled out to his left, saw Walker streaking open on a post route, and lobbed it right into his hands just to see the redshirt sophomore drop the pass.
- Chiles and Walker had a good connection throughout the wind and rain of Tuesday’s practice. The true freshman dropped another ball into the bread basket of Walker, hitting him for 30 on a deep corner route to the far side of the field. For a guy who has been labeled as a project passer, I’d say the project is going pretty well..
- For the two guys ahead of Aiden, it seemed like another mix of Ben Gulbranson and DJ Uiagalelei splitting first teams reps. DJ came out first in both the 2-minute drills and the live session at the end, but both mixed in with the first team OL and WRs.
- DJ made one pretty notable throw amongst an okay day from the transfer, finding Rweha Munyagi Jr. up the seam for a decent gain. The rest of the junior’s day was a mix of overthrows (with another near-INT on a nice blitz by LB John Miller off the edge) and short passes. You could say the same for Gulbranson…
- Flipping over to the defense, the play of the day came from Skyler Thomas, playing safety, picking off Gulbranson on a 15-yard bench route to the near sideline. Thomas mentioned after practice how comfortable he was playing safety or corner, he looked mighty good playing safety on that play.
- I thought the defensive line started to do really well as practice wound down. Outside linebacker Mathias Malaki-Donaldson blew up running back Jake Reichle on a stretch play, reading the play perfectly and angling himself through the line of scrimmage to tally the TFL.
- Defensive lineman Takari Hickle registered a sack of his own on a play-action fake, not fooled at all, bursting into the backfield from the edge to bring down Gulbranson.
- Makiya Tongue made another great play in coverage from his LB spot, swatting away a Chiles pass on a comeback route early in practice.
- Kicking-wise, Everett Hayes nailed his only FG from 33. Atticus Sappington missed his only kick from 43, and Josh McCormick made his from 33 (2x) and 38.
