Offense

The offense struggled in the rain at the Prothro Practice fields on Thursday. The wet conditions made it difficult for receivers to catch the ball and the offense to find a rhythm, especially during the seven-on-seven portion of practice. In practice, wide receivers and tight ends struggled with drops and passes going directly out of their hands today. However, once the rainy conditions disappeared, the offense began to find its footing towards the end of practice.

The quarterbacks struggled the most throughout practice, which is a concern heading into the final week of spring ball, where they would be more acclimated to the offense by now. I think it was a byproduct of the defense’s performance today, as the group forced multiple turnovers and interceptions off of the quarterbacks who took reps in the team portions of practice.

Quarterbacks Dom Montiel and Gevani McCoy struggled with turnovers today in practice, with each throwing an interception to the defense. McCoy threw back-to-back interceptions in one of the team portions of practice. Both linebacker Melvin Jordan IV and defensive back Tyrice Ivy Jr. picked off McCoy on ensuing possessions. Montiel threw a ball directly toward the vicinity of linebacker Aidan Sullivan, who read his eyes for an easy interception.

Quarterback Ben Gulbranson did not practice again today and was spotted along the sideline in street clothes. This marks the second open practice Gulbranson has not participated in, and why he didn’t practice remains unclear.

Quarterback Gabarri Johnson did not take any live reps in practice today but took most of the first-team reps with the offense in seven-on-sevens. Johnson struggled with the wet conditions but completed some easy throws to running backs Gavin Haines and Dyonte Navarette to regain rhythm.

The best play from the offense came from wide receiver Zach Card, who went up and over Sam Mason Jr. for a spectacular catch during the team period of practice. Card has started to craft his game to be more of a complete receiver rather than simply relying on speed alone, and the most significant thing for speed guys like him is to stop rather than keep going, depending on the route he’s running.

Defense/special teams

The defense had a dominant day during practice as they forced four turnovers against the offense.

In addition to Jordan IV, Ivy Jr., and Sullivan each nabbing an interception today, defensive back Sam Mason Jr. also had an interception of his own against quarterback Travis Throckmorton. Defensive back Sai Vadrawale III almost had an interception of his own, but it went through his han. He also had a pass breakup in the team’s portion of practice.

When the defensive backs weren’t creating turnovers in practice, they were creating pass breakups with tight coverage against tight ends and wide receivers they were lined up across from.

The defense's strength headed into the final spring football practice before the spring game is the secondary. Both defensive coordinator Keith Heyward and defensive backs coach Rod Chance have the room looking ready for the start of the 2024 season. There is a lot of depth in the group, and they can mix in guys in different formations, presenting challenges for opposing offensive to consider in a game environment.

There were some examples of disguising coverages today in practice, with some defensive backs walking up towards the line of scrimmage before dropping back into coverage. While we haven’t seen the full wrinkles of Heyward’s defense, the one thing that I’m looking forward to is the way he’ll use the strength of this defense to either create pressure off the edge or even challenge opposing quarterbacks with disguised coverages, showing that they’re selling out to stop either the run or pass.

Defensive back Jahiem Patterson took reps with the first team defense in the team period of practice when they were running the two-minute drill.

In his lone attempt, kicker Everett Hayes missed a 50-yard field goal.
