TIGHT END

We have yet to really see the role that the TE position will play in the new look OSU offense. But with weapons like Caleb Smith and Ryan Nall, the TE position should play a pivotal role this upcoming season. There are currently 6 TEs on the Beavers’ roster with 2 (Smith and Kellen Clute) exhausting their eligibility at the end of the season. With 2 TEs as a part of the 2015 class, the position does not seem to be of high importance for the Beavers. It is my guess that they are looking to take 1, possibly 2, in 2016.

COMMIT

John Bates (Unrated)
6-6 210 lbs. Committed 7/27/15
Lebanon HS Lebanon, OR

Bates received his 1st offer from the Beavers just a couple weeks ago at a Beavers camp. He was also receiving some interest from Boise State and Wyoming. Bates’ offer was a sign that the staff had moved on from Kizer. Bates has good size but will need to add weight in order to play in the Pac-12. Bates’ athleticism is off the charts for his size as he led the Lebanon track team to a 5A state title and clocking a 4.7 40-yard dash at a recent camp. Could be a real sleeper not only in the state of Oregon but along the west coast.

TARGETS

Devin Asiasi (4* #5 TE #124 OVR #23 in CA)
6-5 223 lbs.
De La Salle HS Concord, CA

Asiasi has to be considered a complete long shot right now for a number of reasons. He has named a top group of USC, Oregon, Washington, Alabama, Michigan, Miami, UCLA and Cal and it appears that a couple of those programs are a little ahead of the others (USC, Alabama and Miami). The De La Salle standout attended OSU’s spring game but reportedly appeared to be very disengaged during his visit. The OSU staff appears to have moved on as well as they have passed out a number of other offers since the spring game. But on the other hand I wouldn’t completely cross him off the list as OSU recruits Poly athletes perhaps better than any other staff in the nation and the program does have a good connection with the De La Salle program. Admittedly, Asiasi is an extreme long shot, but he plans on putting off a decision until signing day and if other programs fill up by then, it might just open a door for OSU to move back in the picture.

Loa Kaufusi (3* #20 in UT 5.5 Rivals Rating)
6-4 205 lbs.
East HS Salt Lake City, UT

Not a whole lot is known about Kaufusi’s recruitment, as he hasn’t been too vocal about his favorites. Loa claims offers from OSU, Utah, Utah St., BYU and Nevada. He would like to major in business. Pulling Loa away from Utah could be tough as he likes their business school and the closeness to home. Coach Sitake, Coach Tuiaki, and Coach Andersen will have to pay pivotal roles in Kaufusi’s recruitment to get him to OSU as they proved last cycle to be the best at recruiting against Utah.

Riley Sharp (Unrated)
6-5 217 lbs.
Skyline HS Salt Lake City, UT

Sharp received an offer from the Beavers late in June, joining Air Force, Nevada, Southern Utah, UNLV and Weber State. Utah is taking a hard look at Sharp as well but have yet to offer. Sharp admittedly grew up a Utah fan, so if they were to offer it would definitely make his recruitment more difficult for everyone else. Currently, OSU and Utah are his leaders but Sharp would like to put off making a decision until at least the middle of his season as more programs could get involved. One of the top returning receivers in the state of Utah, Sharp plans on visiting Corvallis this week to see what OSU has to offer.

Zack Williams (Unrated)
6-5 245 lbs.
North Marion HS Citra, FL

Williams claims offers from Georgia Southern, Louisville, Miami, NC State and OSU, with a top-3 of NC State, OSU and his dream school Miami. Williams would like to take OVs to all three of his top programs but would also like to make a decision towards the beginning of senior season. Miami could be tough to overcome, but the Beavers have recruited the sunshine state very well so far.
