Scrimmage Nuggets:
- As Oregon State gets ready for the 2019 season, tonight’s 7:30 p.m. kickoff was set to simulate game one versus Oklahoma State. As the sun set over Reser Stadium, the energy level was high as the pads popped during the first public scrimmage of fall camp.

- Jake Luton was the first QB to take reps during the scrimmage. Both Luton and Tristan Gebbia received reps with the first team, with both QBs making solid throws, as well as some questionable decisions.

First Team:
QB: Jake Luton
RB: Jermar Jefferson
WR: Isaiah Hodgins
WR: Tyjon Lindsey
WR: Champ Flemings
TE: Noah Togiai
LT: Blake Brandel
LG: Gus Lavaka
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Clay Cordasco
RT: Brandon Kipper

Second Team:
QB: Tristan Gebbia
RB: Artavis Pierce
WR: Jesiah Irish
WR: Andre Bodden/Aaron Short
WR: Kolby Taylor
TE: Isaiah Smalls/Teagan Quitoriano
LT: Joshua Gray
LG: Onesimus Clarke
C: Nathan Eldridge
RG: Jake Levengood
RT: Jaelen Bush

- The team started the scrimmage working on goal-line sets. Luton established the tone for the offense, starting the day with a touchdown to Noah Togiai on a play-action rollout pass. Isaac Hodgins lined up in the backfield as a fullback, something that hasn’t been seen so far through camp.

- Jack Colletto was the second QB to take reps on the day, working primarily in the goal line sets, apart from one offensive drive. Colletto scored three times on quarterback keepers, plunging into the endzone on various plays.

- Luton started the offense off with a completion to Tyjon Lindsey on an out route, followed up by a bomb to Isaiah Hodgins for a little over 40 yards. The big-play ability from Hodgins is prominent, especially with Luton’s big arm. Hodgins only saw action on the first few drives, before being held out in favor of spreading around reps.

- Luton connected with Togiai again, this time into the red zone at the opposite end of the field. The drive was capped off by a Jermar Jefferson run over the left side, resulting with him flipping into the end zone. Jefferson had several good runs and looks ready to eat up opposing defenses.

- Trevon Bradford was in sweatpants and his jersey on the sideline. He went through warm-ups with the wide receivers but was held out of the scrimmage as a precaution.

- Tristan Gebbia was decisive with his passes Saturday evening. He found Jesiah Irish on a nice slant route, only to come up short of the first down marker on third and long. Gebbia also linked up with Job Dockery on a skinny post on another well-thrown ball.

- BJ Baylor didn’t see as many snaps with Pierce back in the mix but did have a nice catch on a swing route out of the backfield. The most impressive part was how Baylor finished his run, putting his shoulder into Jaden Robinson and knocking him back several feet.

- The end of Gebbia’s drive concluded in a touchdown pass to Aaron Short on a fade route. Gebbia made a nice throw, and his excitement and energy every time his team scored showed his leadership on the field. Gebbia was always one of the first people there to congratulate his guys.

- Taron Madison continues to show growth as a runner and receiver. Madison ripped off a nice rush of about 15 yards up the middle and is a physical, downhill runner.

- Later in the scrimmage, Luton found Champ Flemings on a crossing route. Flemings has continued to carve out a niche in the offense amid a crowded receiving core.

Calvin Tyler Jr. also had a nice night. Tyler had back-to-back 15 yard rushes near the end of the scrimmage, and ran had each time he got the ball. Tyler looks to be almost back (if not already) to where he was pre-knee injury last season.

- Near the end of the night, Gebbia hooked up with tight end Luke Musgrave on a stop-and-go route. Musgrave was lined up like a receiver, and went up and got the ball over the shorter corner. Musgrave was brought down at the two-yard line—a near score.

- After the pass to Musgrave to get the ball within the five, Gebbia ran a play-action pass. With immediate pressure, Gebbia pump-faked to get Isaac Garcia in the air, then juked out another defender and dove in for the score. Gebbia noted after the scrimmage that he had to get in the end zone, as the coaches gave him a hard time about not getting in on a similar play yesterday, and that he had a “chip on his shoulder after that.”

- Nick Moore was the only other QB to take reps—no Aidan Willard or Jackson Chryst.

To the Defense…

- The defense was very impressive Saturday night. The defensive line got good penetration up-front, and the whole team was flying around the field and pursuing to the ball. Here’s a look at the first and second teams.

DE: Isaac Hodgins
DT: Elu Aydon/Jordan Whittley
DE: LaMone Williams
OLB: Hamilcar Rashed Jr.
ILB: Shemar Smith
ILB: Avery Roberts
OLB: Andrzej Hughes-Murray
CB: Isaiah Dunn
S: Jeffrey Manning Jr.
S: Omar Hicks-Onu
CB: Alex Austin/Nashon Wright
Nickel: Jaydon Grant

Second Team:
DL: Cody Anderson
DT: Evan Bennett
DE: James Rawls
OLB: Addison Gumbs
ILB: Isaiah Tufaga/Omar Speights
ILB: Doug Taomoelau
OLB: Matthew Tago
CB: Jaden Robinson
S: Alex Austin
S: David Morris
CB: Kaleb Hayes
Nickel: Shawn Wilson

- The defense has shown noticeable growth since last season, and it was validated Saturday night. Nebraska transfer Avery Roberts has showed that he is an instant impact player, and made a tackle-for-loss early in the scrimmage.

- Matthew Tago and Addison Gumbs rotated in with the ones for a drive or two, and both are quick, physical outside ‘backers. Tago made a really nice play coming off the edge to stop Pierce in the backfield for a loss.

- LaMone Williams continues to prove he should see an increase in reps and had a sack on third down to force a punt.

- Before going down with what was described as a minor ankle injury, James Rawls was an impact player for the Beavs. Rawls came away with a fumble recovery after Nick Moore lost the ball trying to pump-fake a defender.

- In terms of pursuing to the football, the Beavs were very solid in that area. The defense was able to get several guys making contact with the ballcarrier, instead of one or two. It helped limit the number of missed tackles—a major issue in the past. Shemar Smith, Jordan Whittley, and Shawn Wilson were all in on a sack on Tristan Gebbia in the backfield.

- Alex Austin saw a lot of playing time, both at corner and safety. Austin had a pass breakup on a ball thrown by Gebbia. Austin—along with Jojo Forest and Akili Arnold—have been impact freshmen in the Beaver secondary.

- Addison Gumbs plays with tons of energy and emotion on the defense. When they allowed a touchdown, he was visibly frustrated. However, Gumbs was a force when he was on the field. Gumbs and Rawls came off the left side together for a sack—another area of concern throughout last season.

- Jaydon Grant has been moving up the ranks and had a near pick off of Luton. Grant appeared to come away with the interception, but the ball hit the ground as he went down according to the refs.

- Riley Sharp saw a good amount of action at outside linebacker. Sharp forced a fumble on Tyler Jr, and the ball was recovered by TraJon Cotton. Coach Tibesar has stressed the importance of forcing turnovers, something the defense did well Saturday.

- One of the most impressive plays I saw from the defense was made by Gumbs. He lined up as the backside defensive end on a run play (lined up opposite the direction the ball was going). Gumbs came hard off the edge and made the tackle from behind after only a three-yard gain. Gumbs’ speed off the edge and closing ability really stood out to me.

- Jordan Whittley is a body in the middle and had several nice tackles. His most important one came on a third-and-goal. Whittley burst through the middle of the line and stood up the ball carrier in the backfield for a loss. He also made another tackle down the field, where he showed off his speed running down the ball carrier.

- LaMone Williams batted a pass down at the line of scrimmage in the red zone. Williams was able to time his jump to knock down a pass that most likely would’ve been a score otherwise.

- Near the end of the scrimmage when the third team was taking more reps, freshman linebacker Jackson Cloyd picked off one of Nick Moore’s passes through traffic. On the next series, Alexander Skelton forced a fumble, which was recovered by Cody Anderson. The defense was solid all night and closed it out on a high note

Special Teams: The returners looked sharp, and Oregon State has plenty to choose from after the display on Saturday.

- Champ Flemings took a kickoff back 55 yards, only to be tripped up by the last guy before he was in the clear. Flemings has returned kicks in the past for OSU and looks to be in the mix again this year.

- Tyjon Lindsey had a really long punt return of about 45 yards before he was tripped up inside the 30-yard line. Lindsey is a dynamic athlete and should be a force in the return game.

- Jesiah Irish’s speed and return ability were something to watch Saturday night. Irish had a punt return touchdown, as well as another long punt return. Irish also had a kickoff return of about 30 yards and has great vision as a returner. However, Irish’s speed is what really sets him apart and what will make him such a weapon in the return game.
