DAY THREE PRACTICE NUGGETS:

It was another hot summer day in Corvallis, as the Beavers donned shoulder pads for the first time this fall. Although the team is still not in full pads, today’s practice was much more physical.

Jake Luton was the first QB to get reps with the offense today, but Gebbia got some first team reps as well. Here was what I gathered to be the first team offense today.

QB: Jake Luton/Tristan Gebbia
RB: Jermar Jefferson
WR: Isaiah Hodgins
WR: Kolby Taylor
WR: Champ Flemings/Tyjon Lindsey/Anthony Gould
TE: Noah Togiai/Isaiah Smalls
LT: Joshua Gray
LG: Gus Lavaka
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Clay Cordasco
RT: Brandon Kipper

Blake Brandel and Nathan Eldridge did not take part in team reps today, but Brandel went through individual drills and Eldridge is on the side. This is most likely precautionary, rather than the result of injury, but I’ll continue to monitor the O-line situation.

Luton made several nice throws, including one to Anthony Gould on a deep-in route, which Gould turned on the burners for a score after the catch.

Luton also had a nice connection with Isaiah Hodgins near the end of practice, where Hodgins fought off Isaiah Dunn to catch a highly contested pass just short of the end zone. The Hodgins-Luton connection is very prevalent.

Tristan Gebbia didn’t have a shabby day by any means. Gebbia made a nice pass to Isaiah Smalls in a tight window, before hitting Gould on a deep out route. Gebbia threaded the needle on multiple passes today, including another out route to Tyjon Lindsey.

Gebbia caught my eye when he rolled out to his right, and pumped faked to get the defender in the air before squeezing a pass to I’Shawn Stewart on a slant route. Gebbia showed poise in the face of pressure, and led his receiver just enough to make the completion.

Jermar Jefferson was his usual self, rumbling around for solid gains pretty much every carry he got. Since the team isn’t in full pads, the defense just ‘wraps up’ although several plays did go to the turf.

BJ Baylor was impressive again out of the backfield as a receiver. Baylor has proved he can be a reliable pass catcher, and showed it once again today on several swing routes out of the backfield. On one pass, he was able to contort his body to keep his feet inbounds on a poor pass, and still managed to get up-field for several yards after.

Although it is tough to see what is going on in the trenches, Gus Lavaka handled Jordan Whittley on one play, driving him to the ground on a run play. That level of physicality will be necessary to get the run game going early.

Luke Musgrave is a very big kid for a true freshman, and he hauled in several passes today including a post from Nick Moore. Musgrave is a physical receiver, and fought off the defender to make the play.

For the defense, there were a lot of rotations, but this is what I gathered to be the starting group.

DE: Isaac Hodgins
DT: Elu Aydon/Jordan Whittley
DE: LaMone Williams
OLB: Hamilcar Rashed Jr.
ILB: Shemar Smith
ILB: Avery Roberts
OLB: Andrzej Hughes-Murray
CB: Isaiah Dunn
S: Omar Hicks-Onu
S: Jalen Moore
CB: Kaleb Hayes

The biggest news defensively was senior Jeromy Reichner going down at the end of practice with a lower body injury. He was helped off the field. I’m not going to speculate on the nature of the injury, and we’ll know more at the start of next week.

Isaiah Dunn is a very physical corner, and was jamming receivers all day long. His competitiveness on the field is very apparent, and his energy hypes up the defense.

However, Dunn did get beat on a double move by Hodgins, but just as the pass was about to be completes, Omar Hicks-Onu came flying over from the safety position to break up the pass. Hodgins thought he was in the clear, and Hicks-Onu’s hustle busted up the nice play.

Prior to his injury, Reichner looked good, and had a tackle-for-loss coming off the edge, and several other good pressures.

Andzrej Hughes-Murry was also impressive from the outside ‘backer role. He had a QB hurry on Luton that forced him to throw the ball away just as he was rolling out.

Matthew Tago was impressive with the second unit, and sacked the QB after a well-timed blitz up the middle. Tago is a part of a deep and competitive linebacker unit this year.

Shawn Wilson has been working as the nickel-back (3rd corner) for most of spring and fall camps, and had an excellent pass breakup today on a slant, that was almost picked off. Wilson was frustrated he didn’t intercept the pass, but it was a nice play nonetheless.

Near the end of practice, the emphasis on run defense was validated when Elu Aydon and Hamilcar Rashed busted up the left side of the line and brought down BJ Baylor in the backfield for a loss.

Quick Notes: David Morris and Jeffrey Manning Jr. did not practice again defensively, but were working out on the side. Artavis Pierce was not on the field for the second straight day, but was training indoors. We should get more injury updates from Coach Smith next week.
