FUN FACTS (Week of March 4)


NATIONAL HONORS


Kevin Abel (San Diego) is one of the national players of the week after tying his career-high with 11 strikeouts and allowing one run in a victory over West Virginia last weekend.


CONFERENCE HONORS


Destiny Slocum (Meridian, Idaho) and Mikayla Pivec (Lynnwood, Wash.) were selected to the All-Pac-12 Team. In addition, Aleah Goodman (Milwaukie, Ore.) earned Pac-12 Honorable Mention, while senior Katie McWilliams (Salem) made the Pac-12 Defensive Honorable Mention. Goodman also added the first-ever Pac-12 Sixth Player Award to her honors.


High jump legend Dick Fosbury will be enshrined into the Pac-12 Hall of Honor next week at the league’s conference tournament.


MODA CENTER HOOPS 2019


The inaugural Phil Knight Invitational will be played at Moda Center Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019. The two-game event will feature OSU vs. Oklahoma and Oregon vs. Memphis in a doubleheader. The PKI is scheduled to run through 2021 currently.


ACADEMIC HONORS


The student-athletes of the month for March are Zak Taylor (Sherwood) from baseball and Chance Burden (Huntington Beach, Calif.) from softball. Taylor is a senior in the College of Liberal Arts, majoring in psychology. Burden is a sophomore in the College of Business majoring in marketing.

RANKINGS

·Women’s Basketball is No. 11 (ranked in every coaches poll since preseason of 2013-14) this week.

·Baseball is as high as No. 1.

·Gymnastics is No. 15.

·Men’s Rowing is No. 18.

·Women’s Rowing is No. 22

·Wrestling is No. 17. The following wrestlers are nationally ranked -- 125 Pounds – No. 3 Ronnie Bresser (Klamath Falls); Heavyweight; No. 3 Amar Dhesi (Surrey, B.C.); No. 30 Hunter Willits (Pueblo, Colo.).

FOOTBALL

·Currently the team has more sophomores (42) than juniors and seniors combined (39). OSU has the most sophomores of any team in the Pac-12.

·Freshman wide receiver Jesiah Irish (Snoqualmie, Wash.) had the top time in last week’s 40-yard dash (4.26) at the OSU Combine; defensive back Kaleb Hayes (San Bernardino, Calif.) had the team’s best vertical jump (39”); sophomore wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey (Corona, Calif.) had the top pro agility drill (3.98 sec.); senior defensive back Omar Hicks-Onu (Carrollton, Texas) had the team’s top broad jump (10’8”). The drills are similar to the NFL Combine that is held in Indianapolis.

·Spring Practice opened this week. There will be six practices before Spring Break, with the last nine following leading up to annual Spring Game at Reser Stadium April 20 at 11 a.m. on the Pac-12 Network. The team will also practice at Mountainside High School in Beaverton for the second straight year – April 13 at 11 a.m.

·Football has 20 returning starters, including specialists, out of a possible 25.

BASKETBALL (MEN)

·Team is 17-11 (9-7 in Pac-12) and enters the final week of the regular season this week.

·Games this week include at Pac-12 leader Washington (23-6, 14-2) Wednesday at 7 p.m. and at Washington State (11-18, 4-12) Saturday at Noon. Both games are on the Pac-12 Network.

·OSU is tied for third in the Pac-12 standings with Utah and UCLA. The top four teams in the conference standings gain a bye in next week’s Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas.

·Team leads the Pac-12 in field goal percentage (.466); the last time OSU finished a season leading the conference in that category was 1984-85 (.525).

·Last three losses (UCLA, UA, ASU) have been by a combined six points.

·Team is shooting 74.1 percent from the free throw line; it would be the best percentage since the 1976-77 team finished at 74.3 percent.

·Stephen Thompson, Jr., (Los Angeles) ranks fifth at OSU for career scoring 1,722 points – 23 points short of fourth place holder Roberto Nelson. He’s also 10th in steals with 173, five short of moving into eighth at OSU.

·Tres Tinkle (Missoula, Mont.) is the only player in the country averaging at least 20.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. He is seventh at OSU for career scoring with 1,581 points.

·Kylor Kelley (Gervais, Ore.) leads the nation in blocked shots per game (3.54).

BASKETBALL (WOMEN)

·Team is 24-6 (13-3 in Pac-12) and heads to the Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas this week as the No. 3 seed.

·For the fifth-straight season, the team has a bye in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament, and will face either Washington or Utah Friday at 8:30 p.m. on Pac-12 Network.

·With 24 victories, the Beavers have already matched the fifth-highest win total in program history.

·The Beavers are fourth in the nation in 3-point percentage.

·Destiny Slocum (Meridian, Idaho) has a total of 15 20-plus point games in her collegiate career (Oregon State + Maryland), the most by any player on the OSU roster.

·Mikayla Pivec (Lynnwood, Wash.) has at least 18 points in four straight games, and is averaging 18.8 points and 10.0 rebounds per game over that stretch.

·Pivec also cracked Oregon State’s top-10 for career rebounds last week, currently sitting at 691.

·Aleah Goodman (Milwaukie, Ore.) has seven double-digit scoring games in her last nine outings. She is 23rd in the nation in 3-point percentage.

·Joanna Grymek (Krakow, Poland) tallied six of her 14 points and three of her five blocks in the overtime periods Sunday at Arizona.

·Katie McWilliams (Salem, Ore.) has played in 134 career games, making 84 starts. The Oregon State record for most games played is held by Marie Gulich with 139.

GYMNASTICS

·Team travels to face No. 4 LSU in Baton Rouge on Friday at 5 p.m. PST. The meet will stream on SEC Network + through WatchESPN.com and the app.

·Takes undefeated road record (6-0) this week to LSU.

·Destinee Davis (Woodland, Wash.) and Lena Greene (Tigard) have returned from injury.

·The Beavers’ floor exercise lineup is tied for ninth in the nation.

BASEBALL

·Team is 10-1 and heads north for the Seattle Baseball Showcase at the recently renamed T-Mobile Park (formerly Safeco Field). OSU opens with Minnesota (2-8/OSU won earlier matchup this season 13-1), followed by Indiana (6-5) and No. 19 Coastal Carolina (10-2) Friday through Sunday. All games are at 3 p.m. and the Sunday contest is on Pac-12 Network.

·OSU is 16-1 vs. Big Ten competition, which Minnesota and Indiana are members, since 2017.

·The team’s bullpen has allowed four earned runs in 39 innings with a 0.92 ERA.

·Pitcher Brandon Eisert (Beaverton) leads the nation with four victories for the season and has not allowed a run.

·OSU opened the year 10-0 before suffering a series-ending loss to West Virginia. OSU has had at least one 10-game win streak for seven consecutive seasons.

·The Beavers rank sixth nationally allowing just 2.2 runs per game. The team’s scoring margin of 5.5 is eighth.

·OSU is 121-19-1 (.862) over its last 141 games dating back to 2017.

SOFTBALL

·Travels to Los Angeles for five games at the LMU Tournament.

·Senior Shelby Weeks (Tracy, Calif.) is eight stolen bases away from holding the OSU Career Record – she currently has 50.

·OSU sits No. 1 in Pac-12 (27) stolen bases, No. 2 in lowest runs allowed (27) and No. 3 for batters struck out looking (35).

·Pitcher Nerissa Eason (Grass Valley, Calif.) is No. 2 for lowest ERA (0.97) in the Pac-12.

·Jessica Garcia (Hughson, Calif.) tied for No. 2 for stolen bases (nine) in the conference.

·Frankie Hammoude (Oakland, Calif.) is No. 1 for on base pct. (.525) and No. 2 die slugging pct. (.886).

WOODCHIPS

·Beaver Sports Talk from Buffalo Wild Wings is every Tuesday (6-7 p.m.) and features the basketball teams and other guests periodically.

·Wrestling is at the Pac-12 Championships Saturday at Stanford. The meet is being televised by the Pac-12 Network beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday via delayed broadcast.

·Women’s Rowing opens the spring season vs. Stanford at Redwood Shores, Calif.

·Women’s Golf is at Tucson Monday and Tuesday.
