Day 15 Practice Nuggets
- With OSU choosing to have a lighter practice on Saturday after their scrimmage on Friday, the Beavers ramped up their level of activity on Sunday as they took part in a good amount of 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 work with some individual drill stations mixed in.
- Overall, today was perhaps the best energy of fall camp on the field. The music was loud and there was a little bit more swagger in the orange and black jerseys as pads were popping.
- Conor Blount was the first quarterback to take reps during the 11-on-11 followed by Jake Luton. Both of these guys played with mostly the first team while Jack Colletto and Aidan Willard took reps with mostly 2nd teamers.
- Blount, who has been looking for more consistent play over the past week or so, had a very solid day on the field. He made several really nice decisions on the run and evaded pressure.
- Luton might have had his best individual day in fall camp as he made several throws that were extremely impressive. The first was a 62-yard fly route to Tino Allen down the left sideline where Luton placed the ball right in the breadbasket of Allen, who was tightly guarded by Kaleb Hayes. This was a perfect example of a quarterback putting the ball in a perfect location where only his guy can get it, and seeing this from Luton is a big step in the right direction of his continued development. His second throw was an across the field throw to Connor Laverty on a must-convert fourth down play where he rolled out of the pocket, avoided the rush and fired a dart to Laverty.
- Speaking of Luton, today was one of the first practices of camp where I saw Luton run the zone-read. Luton and Jermar Jefferson teamed up on several read-option plays including a handoff to Jefferson who took the handoff on the left hash and raced down the sideline for a 25 yard touchdown.
- Luton also showed off his versatility as an athlete during the end of practice as OSU practiced using Luton as a pooch-punter on short fourth down situations. We’ve seen schools like Washington, Cal, Colorado, and Arizona State have success implementing this wrinkle and Luton looked the part of being very solid as he hit a very deep 40-50 yard punt.
- Colletto struggled with execution during the 11-on-11 work, but found some success in 7-on-7. The pressure of the defensive line is something Colletto is still getting used to at the college level.
- On Saturday, I talked about freshman running back Kase Rogers and his very underrated physical running style. That was on display once again today as Rogers scored a touchdown and leveled a safety on his way to paydirt.
- For those who have been wondering about Christian Wallace, I took some time today to watch him during live work and offer my two cents -- Wallace has the physique, athleticism, and talent to be a difference maker in this league but still shies away from contact and doesn’t hit the hole with the power that he could. He’ll show flashes of big time potential, but can’t seem to find it consistently.
- Defensive Coordinator Tim Tibesar was not on hand at OSU’s practice today as he was attending a memorial, according to an OSU spokesman.
- Speaking of OSU’s defense, they had one of their best practices of the season. They really got after the offense today and was the “winning” side at the end of practice as they avoided 30 updowns that the offense had to partake in.
- Jim Michalczik felt that the offense was in need of a little lesson because of the high number of maintenance issues that the 2nd and 3rd teammers had such as penalties and poor technique during the practice session. The media was given a front row seat to these up downs and by the end, OSU’s offensive players heard Michalczik’s message loud and clear.
- OSU’s first team defense stayed the same today compared to Saturday as the Beavers continued to show a 2-4-5 defensive alignment with several other packages mixed in. Given how thin the Beavers are up front on both bodies and experience, it makes sense OSU will tap into deeper parts of their defense to pick up the slack.
- Lamone Williams has been a guy who hasn’t gotten a lot of praise in fall camp, but he certainly deserves praise after today. Williams was mostly working with the second defensive unit, but also rotated in with the 1’s when they go with a three man front. Williams’ quick step and knack for rushing the quarterback was particularly impressive today and he’s a guy I’d keep and eye on in the next couple practices.
- Some good injury news out of Corvallis is that wide receiver I’Shawn Stewart, who has been limited all fall with an undisclosed injury, was back in a no-contact doing individual drills on the side. DeShon Wilson, who had missed the past few practices with a head injury, was back in a white no-contact in individual drills as well.
