DAY 12 PRACTICE NUGGETS
  • Day 12 of Oregon State football fall camp brought us back into the friendly confines of Reser Stadium as the Beavers donned their road white helmets during a shorter than usual practice day.
  • The biggest news of the day was that Jonathan Smith announced that safety David Morris and running back Calvin Tyler would miss time moving forward. He didn’t offer a timetable on the two, but said he didn’t think either would be season ending. For Morris, Smith said that it was a foot injury, opposite of the one he had surgery on in the offseason. The good news is that Smith seemed confident that they’d get Morris back. Tyler sustained a knee injury in practice earlier this week and Smith seemed a little less optimistic about how quickly he could return saying they’re still waiting to see.

  • For those wondering about why Jake Luton didn’t take any reps during Tuesday’s practice, Smith said that Luton had taken a helmet to the hand and was held out for precautionary reasons. The good news for the Beavers is that Luton was back taking reps in Thursday’s practice during the 11-on-11 periods.

  • Cornerback Isaiah Dunn was back participating in 11-on-11 work after being limited for most of fall with an injury. While he was in a white no-contact jersey, he looked comfortable being back on the field.

  • When asked if he thought they were getting close to naming a starting quarterback, Smith said he wouldn’t say so. “Everything is getting evaluated, and we’re getting closer to a starting point, but I wouldn’t say we’re close,” Smith said.

  • In terms of practice today, it was a very light day in terms of newsworthy notes. The Beavers didn’t do a ton of 11-on-11 work today, opting for more individual position group drills that we’ve seen for the past two weeks. The Beavers also ended practice about 20-30 minutes earlier than normal.

  • There were several highlight plays during the 11-on-11 work, but the one that stood out the most was Jack Colletto’s 72 yard touchdown pass to Jesiah Irish on an inside receiver screen. Irish only caught the ball about 10 yards down the field, but then turned the burners on as he outran and outmaneuvered the defense thanks to great downfield blocking and vision.

  • Colletto however, tossed an interception to Jeffrey Manning on the very next play as Manning jumped the route and made a great play on the ball. This is where the issue of consistency comes into play with the QB’s. When they make a good play, it’s often times followed shortly by a poor decision. OSU needs to continue to develop their quarterbacks to limit issues of inconsistency.

  • In terms of overall quarterback play today, no guy really stood out amongst the group as has been the case for the past few practices. Luton, Colletto, and Blount were all pretty even today, with each guy having his good and bad moments. With Smith indicating that the QB situation is still far from over, it could be up until the week of the Ohio State game before we get the QB situation resolved.

  • Stay tuned for my QB breakdown story between Luton, Colletto, and Blount on Friday.
