With a number of key players resting or nursing lingering injuries, it was largely the show of the young guys at Mountainside. Here’s what the first team offense looked like today, with just a few changes at receiver compared to day 10.
QB: Jake Luton
RB: Artavis Pierce
WR: Champ Flemings
WR: Jesiah Irish
WR: Kolby Taylor
TE: Noah Togiai
LT: Blake Brandel
LG: Gus Lavaka
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Clay Cordasco
RT: Brandon Kipper
- Both Luton and Gebbia opened the live session by each getting a two-minute with their respective teams. Luton ran with the 1’s while Gebbia ran with the 2’s.
- Luton’s two-minute drill was capped by a perfectly-placed 32 yard touchdown pass to Jesiah Irish who was able to create just enough space between the Beaver defenders to haul in the catch. Luton looked sharp, poised, and confident leading his team down the field.
- Gebbia’s drive resulted in a turnover on downs after several poorly executed plays. Whether it was a bad snap, not picking up the blitz, or throwing into tight coverage, Gebbia’s first two-minute session wasn’t effective.
- Jack Colletto and Nick Moore were each given a few opportunities to move with the third string unit. Colletto’s role as a goal-line, running wildcat option is all but set in stone as nearly all his reps involved designed QB reads and RPO’s.
-Jordan Choukair was quite efficient on the day. I wasn’t able to get his exact yardage, but made 6-7 field goals from various distances and from my count, only missed one kick. He nailed several from 40 plus range which is certainly good news for
- BJ Baylor just had the highlight of the day with the third team offense as he broke a 62 yard touchdown run off the right side and raced down the sideline. For visual comparison, very similar to AP's run against Ohio State, granted a few yards less.
- Another 3rd team highlight: Aidan Willard launched a 75 yard pass to Another Gould who fought off Omar Hicks-Onu and beat him in a footrace to the end zone. Gould has some wheels and could be in line for at least kick return duties with the skills he possess. Smith has been really high on Gould for some time now and it will be interesting to see how quickly he can rise up the depth chart because he’s got some game-changing speed.
DE: Lamone Williams
DT: Elu Aydon/Jeromy Reichner/Jordan Whittley
DE: Isaac Hodgins
OLB: Matthew Tago/John McCartan
ILB: Isaiah Tufaga/Doug Taumoelau
ILB: Shemar Smith
OLB: Hamilcar Rashed
CB: Jeffrey Manning/Kitan Oladapo
S: Omar Hicks-Onu
S: Jalen Moore
CB: Isaiah Dunn
- If there was one recurring theme throughout the day for the defense, it was the strong play from the defensive line. Whether it was Luton, Gebbia, Moore, or Colletto, the defensive made life hard on them and sped up their internal clock rather quickly.
- Additionally, I was impressed with how much better the Beavers are moving laterally as a team on defense. OSU’s offensive units routinely tried to run to the outside, and more times than not, the defense had 3-4 guys on the ball rallying for tackles. It’s early, but the defense is much better.
-The Beaver defense was impressive with their backs against their own goal line. Tim Tibesar’s group allowed for plays in between the 20’s, but made life really really tough and physical in the red zone. An impressive stand capped the end of the day as the Beavers held a Gebbia-led team to a turnover on downs.
