On the JoeBeaver show yesterday,Mike Parker had Bud Withers as a guest who used to cover osu basketball for the Eugene Register Guard,before moving on to the Seattle Times. If you lived through the Civil War in the 1970's,you will never forget it...ever.
Withers has written a book that will come out this Fall on uo hoops during the Dick Harter era(early to late 1970's) with lots of stories about his rivalry with osu and Ralph Miller and the unbelievable style of play they had...the kamakazi kids.
Here are a couple notes from those days...
1. The chancellors trophy was given to the winner of the yearly series between uo/osu. A male cheerleader from osu grabbed the trophy at the end of the game where osu was going to win,and the head coach from uo tripped him breaking the trophy almost causing a brawl from the packed Gill coliseum crowd.
2. An osu male cheerleader got on the mic at Gill Coliseum in Dick Harter's first year congratulation uo on being the first team to go 0-14 in conference. Who would do that today? Lol
3. At the old Far West Classic,osu was playing uo for 5th place on a Tuesday at 2pm. Memorial Coliseum was sold out for the game in the mid 1970's.
4. Every player from uo was expected to dive for balls on the floor...rough house play...physical...etc for uo. The Detroit Pistons of the early 1990's. It destroyed lots of very talented kids mentally and physically.
5. Rickey Lee banked in a 35 footer to beat the ducks in o.t. after he was mauled by the uo defensively to win by one.
6.Greg Ballard hit a shot at Mac Court that counted to beat the Beavers by one with a pic in the Eugene Register Guard with the ball still in his hands and the light on. Home court cooking.
I only saw a few of those games in that era,but no rivalry I have ever seen matches it...nothing close. Those schools truly hated each other,..so many memories.
