CORVALLIS – Oregon State head football coach Gary Andersen announced Thursday the appointments of Jason Phillips and John Rushing to the Beaver coaching staff, pending final OSU Human Resources’ approval.
“Coach Phillips and Coach Rushing are tremendous additions to our coaching staff,” Andersen said. “Both are very experienced coaches, great recruiters and take great pride in building young men and pushing them to excel at a high level on and off the field. The entire staff is excited to get to work for the upcoming season. Go Beavs!”
Phillips joins the Beaver staff as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. He arrives in Corvallis after spending the 2016 season as the wide receivers coach at Kansas.
Prior to his one-year stint at Kansas, Phillips spent three seasons as the co-offensive coordinator at SMU (2012-14), helping the Mustangs’ offense set numerous individual and team records, including 1,000-plus yard receivers, 100-plus reception players, scoring, scoring average, total offense, passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions, passing attempts, completion percentage and first downs among others. Mustang quarterback Garrett Gilbert finished the 2013 season second in the nation for total offense and the team ranked eighth overall for passing offense.
Phillips enjoyed a lengthy professional career after setting school receiving records at his alma mater of Houston during the Heisman Trophy career of quarterback Andre Ware. He twice earned All-American honors, led the nation for receiving yards two years, was selected to the former Southwest Conference’s All-Decade Team and is a member of the Houston Hall of Honor. Phillips is a 2001 graduate of the University of Houston with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology.
He played in the NFL with the Detroit Lions for two seasons and the Atlanta Falcons for three years following his collegiate playing career. Phillips also played one season each with the Birmingham Barracudas and Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL). His coaching career also includes at Houston, Texas State and Baylor, plus NFL intern appointments with the Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings and Falcons.
“I'm very excited and feel fortunate to have this opportunity to join Coach Andersen, who is one of the greatest leaders in our profession,” Phillips said. “I hope to be an asset to his staff and further his vision for Oregon State football.”
Rushing, who will assume the role of safeties coach, arrives at OSU after spending the 2016 season with the Los Angeles Rams as a special teams and defensive consultant after seven years with the Green Bay Packers. During his time with the Packers, he worked with the offense defense and was highly involved in special teams. The Packers played in 11 postseason games during Rushing’s tenure, and won the 2011 Super Bowl against Pittsburgh. Rushing also coached in three NFL Pro Bowl games.
He entered the NFL after spending six seasons at Utah State (2003-08) as a secondary coach with special teams responsibilities. Rushing also has coached at Montana State, Boise State, Willamette and Merced Union High School in California.
Rushing was a four-year starter as a defensive back at Washington State and set a then school record by starting 46 games. He earned Pac-10 honorable mention honors as a freshman and again as a sophomore. In 1991, he was named to the Sporting News Freshman All-America team. He played post-college for two years in the CFL with The Birmingham Barracudas and Edmonton Eskimos, and was a free agent with the Dallas Cowboys. Rushing is a 1995 graduate of WSU with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and in 2005 earned a master’s degree from Boise State.

Andersen, who also announced he will no longer serve as the defensive line coach, has adjusted responsibilities within his coaching staff. Dave Baldwin will move from inside receivers coach to tight ends, T.J. Woods remains the offensive line coach with the addition of run game coordinator, and Chad Kauha’aha’a will continue in his associate head coach role and oversee the defensive line and outside linebackers. The remaining coaching staff will maintain their roles from the 2016 season -- Kevin McGiven (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks), Kevin Clune (defensive coordinator/inside linebackers), Cory Hall (cornerbacks), and Telly Lockette (running backs).
Oregon State returns to the field in preparation for the 2017 season next month with the annual Spring Game set for March 18 at Reser Stadium.
