Offensive Scrimmage Nuggets
  • Jake Luton led out the first-team offense for the Beavers’ first live scrimmage of the season. Luton managed the offense well, including the mix of tempo introduced by Gary Anderson and the offense.
  • Luton showed mobility, poise, and good footwork in his reps so far. His best throw of the day came on the second drive, where he dropped a dime into the waiting arms of Hunter Jarmon. Luton looked cool and collected as he stepped up in the pocket to deliver the throw.

  • The offensive line looked more like a unit out with the first team. Luton had a good pocket for his first drive, definitely a positive after losing three starters. Sumner Houston has been taking the majority of reps at center, according to O-Line Coach TJ Woods. “I think Sumner’s snapping the ball well,” Woods said.

  • Ryan Nall played the first offensive series getting a single handoff for several yards. Artavis Pierce did not make an appearance. “AP and Nall didn’t partake today,” Woods said. “They don’t have much to prove out here… For us, we need more than just those two guys.”

  • Speaking of Running Backs, Kieran Yancy made a significant impression, with a long 60 yard rush for a score. The junior read the cutback lane and holes very well all day.

  • Senior Jaylynn Bailey also took a good portion of carries, and broke a couple for 10+ yards.

  • Something that will be different, especially in game situations this season will be tempo. Jake Luton and Darell Garretson ran most of the up-tempo offense, with Luton’s being the most polished.

  • Quarterback: I think Luton has established himself as the “man to beat” in the QB race

  • Receivers appeared to be an area of concern, as dropped passes and mis-timed routes were present, but not dominant. Expect this to be an area of focus for Anderson before the season. On only pick from Luton, it was a perfect throw that was dropped by the intended target.

  • Offense was overall very balanced between pass and run, with a trick play mixed in occasionally.
Defensive Nuggets
  • Secondary was solid today, with Christian Wallace leading the way with an interception. Xavier Crawford played well also, breaking up some close passes. The defense only allowed two passing touchdowns. Jalen Moore was flying around the field, making some big hits and letting his presence be felt.
  • Defense also forced a turnover, stripping the ball from RB Jaylynn Bailey in the red zone.

  • Defensive Line appeared slow off the ball, with the first team not getting as much pressure. The second and third units were able to come up with some sacks.

  • Linebackers also looked solid, and were flying around the field making plays. Wesley Payne had a big re-route on a receiver coming across the field, very physical.

  • Defensive ends were also fast off the edge, shutting down most of the offense’s outside run game.
