VANCOUVER, B.C. – The No. 8 Oregon State women’s basketball team took down Western Kentucky 74-60 Thursday evening at the Vancouver Showcase in Vancouver, B.C.

“I’m grateful for the win today,” said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. “Western Kentucky is a battle-tested team, so we knew they wouldn’t be phased by anything. We didn’t shoot the ball the way we are capable of today, which made things more difficult on us. I am proud of the way we battled through that. We defended well and we won the boards; we made the plays we needed to get the win.”

With the victory, Oregon State advances in the winners side of the bracket, and will take on No. 13 South Carolina on Friday.

Junior Mikayla Pivec stuffed the stat sheet, finishing with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Senior Katie McWilliams scored 17 points on 6-for-9 shooting, while Destiny Slocum tallied 18 points and five assists.

Senior Joanna Grymek finished with seven points and seven rebounds, and sophomore Taya Corosdale gobbled up a team-high nine boards.

Junior Janessa Thropay set a career-high with six points on 3-for-3 shooting.

As a team, Oregon State finished with 44 points in the paint and shot 48.3 percent from the floor, while limiting Western Kentucky to 32.4 percent shooting.

The Beavers jumped out to an early lead, heading to the first media timeout up 11-8. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the first quarter, as they ended the period level at 19.

Oregon State used a 7-0 second quarter run to go in front 30-24. The Beavers scored a total of 22 points in the second quarter to head to the locker room up 41-31.

Slocum headed to the break with 12 points, while McWilliams put up 10 points in the opening 20 minutes. OSU held Western Kentucky scoreless for the final 4:16 of the second quarter.

The Beavers picked up right where they left off in the third quarter, scoring six-straight points to extend the lead to 15. The Toppers battled back to get within 11 as the sides headed to the closing frame.

Western Kentucky cut things back to single-digits early in the fourth quarter, but Oregon State answered with seven unanswered points to bring the lead back to 15. The Beavers remained in control from there, taking the win by 14.

The Beavers will face the Gamecocks Friday evening at 8:30 p.m.
