CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State took a quarter to get its legs under a new-look team that features six newcomers with many in important roles.

Then, they unleashed an outstanding defensive effort en route to a decisive 80-43 victory over Western Washington. The Beavers allowed just 23 points over the final 30 minutes and held the visitors to 26.8 percent shooting from the floor.

Western Washington got off to a hot start from beyond the arc, making 4-of-9 treys in the first quarter. The Beavers cracked down starting with an 0-for-3 second quarter, and WWU made just one more three after the first, finishing 5-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Lily Hansford brought the juice for the Beavs in the first half. After coming on late in the first quarter, the sophomore’s shooting from three provided an offensive burst with seven points at halftime.

Newcomer Kelsey Rees was another bright spot in the early moments, scoring six points with two rebounds and two assists in 12 minutes on-court. Rees made 3-of-4 shots from the field. The junior closed the game with 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and a team-high plus-minus of +29.

Raegan Beers got back to being her dominant self to open the second half. The sophomore simply outmuscled WWU down low, opening the final 20 with two three-point plays to get the Beavs going. She finished with a team-high 17 points to go with seven rebounds three assists and three steals. Oregon State outscored the Vikings 29-4 in a dominant third quarter.

Talia von Oelhoffen played distributor for OSU, dishing out a team-high six assists to go with two steals and five rebounds. Timea Gardiner had a solid all-around day with nine points, four assists and four rebounds.

The Beavs officially tip off the 2023-24 season on Monday, November 6 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The contest is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start.
