Scrimmage report from Greaves below! OSU had a big last day in Bend that resulted in some big plays via Jake Luton and Noah Togiai.

- The offense looks like they are taking full advantage of Jake Luton's arm. By spreading the receivers out, the offense allows Luton to put the receivers in mismatch situations, whether that be a slower defender, or a smaller one.

- The defense was in a 2-4-5 set today which benefits the pass rush if you have guys like Titus Failauga. This defense set allowed him to have more space and really use his size and speed to reach disrupt the offense.

-A healthy Seth Collins can be deadly, and I mean very deadly, how healthy did he look? Well he hurdled a defender...again. Today I noticed his routes were sharper, and his release has become unstoppable, not to mention if you throw the ball anywhere near him he's going to catch it. Collins finish the game with three receptions for 47 yards.

-The defensive line looks much improved. With this new defense set that they were using today, it allowed them to feature the linebacking core. Having players like Bright Ugwoegbu that are able to rush the edge every play is something that will disrupt opposing offenses.

-I finally had a good look at Aaron Short, as he has been quiet for much of fall camp but if the Beavers can get him the ball in one-on-one match up's it could be trouble for the defense. Short ran a go-route against All-American Xavier Crawford and had him beat in a foot race, which shows you the big-playmaking ability of Short.

-Another new face I had my eye on was Aidan Willard. You can tell the kid is young, but his footwork is what stands out to me the most. Numerous times today he had Kesi Ah Hoy pressuring him and he simply beat him with footwork and delivered a check down route. His calm and collective posture brings confidence to the offense which might be something to keep an eye on years to come.

-Wesley Payne has become the enforcer of pain for the defense. Trevon Bradford went for a screen pass and Payne payed a devastating hit on him jarring the ball lose for an incomplete pass.

-Thomas Tyner lead all rushing today with a carries for 54 yards. At this point now I think he might be fighting for that second string spot at running back. However, Artavis Pierce had limited reps so it is hard to say if he truly is battling for that spot.

- The first team offensive line was missing Gus Lavaka today. But, Kammy Delp was very impressive. This is great news for the Beaver line because now they know if someone goes down, they have a very reliable player to take the spot up front.

- A concerning spot on the defense right now is the secondary. With a handful of injuries to the corners the position group was very thinned out for the scrimmage. Both Shawn Wilson and Isaiah Dunn did not play today due to injury. This could pose a problem later in the season.

- Noah Togai exploded for three touchdowns today. He and Luton both looked like they have built some serious chemistry down in the red zone. This could mean Togai is the go to guy in red zone situations.

Recap from OSU..

BEND – The Oregon State football team held its first scrimmage of fall camp in front of approximately 3,800 fans Saturday night at Summit High School as the Beavers concluded a six-day stint in Central Oregon/OSU Cascades Campus.

Starting quarterback Jake Luton guided the first team offense on an opening 9-play 70-yard scoring drive culminating with a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Noah Togiai. Luton connected with true freshman receiver Isaiah Hodgins, who made several defenders miss on a 39-yard pass and catch, to set up the eventual score.

Luton’s second drive also resulted in a touchdown pass, again to Togiai, who missed all but two games last season with an injury. Togiai’s 5-yard reception culminated a 7-play 70-yard drive that featured an 18-yard run by Oregon transfer back Thomas Tyner.

Luton finished the scrimmage 10 of 15 passing for 122 yards with three touchdown passes. Backup quarterbacks Marcus McMaryion and Darell Garretson both were victims of several dropped passes. McMaryion ended 4-for-9 for 36 yards and Garretson was 6-for-9 for 61 yards.

The Luton/Togiai duo connected once more late in the scrimmage for a score in red zone drills, a 14-yard pass and catch.
