BEAVERS WITHOUT BORDERS

NATIONAL AWARDS

· Mikayla Pivec (Lynnwood, Wash.) is a finalist for the Senior Class Award. Fans can vote for the ultimate recipient athttp://www.seniorclassaward.com/vote/

· Pivec is also one of 10 finalists for the Cheryl Miller Award, presented to the nation’s top small forward. Fans can vote for Pivec starting on Friday at hoophallawards.com

· Pivec and Destiny Slocum (Meridian, Idaho) have both been named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team, signifying the top college player. The semifinalists will be announced March 3. Slocum is also on the Lieberman Award Top-10 for the nation’s top point guard.

NETWORKING NIGHT
· Student-athlete Networking Night is Feb. 19. The event features employers from a variety of industries meeting with student-athletes for a career networking event.

FOOTBALL
· The team’s smallish senior class (fewest since 1992 at 12) includes just 10 student-athletes on an athletic scholarship.

· Quarterback Jake Luton (Marysville, Wash.) and receiver Isaiah Hodgins (Oakley, Calif.) have been invited to the NFL Combine later this month in Indianapolis.

· Luton is the third OSU quarterback to be invited to the Combine in the last 10 years – Sean Canfield (2000) and Sean Mannion (2005). Both Canfield and Mannion were drafted.

· Hodgins is the fifth receiver to be invited to the Combine since 2012 – James Rodgers (2012), Markus Wheaton (2013), Brandin Cooks (2014), and Victor Bolden Jr., (2017).

· There are 130 FBS football programs in the country; third-year head coach Jonathan Smith nearly ranks in the top half in terms of longevity at 68th.

BASKETBALL (Men)

· The team (14-9) has two wins over top 25 teams this season for the first time since 1999. Wayne Tinkle’s crew has another chance against a top 25 team this week hosting No. 16 Colorado Saturday at 7 p.m. on FS1. The Beavers host Utah Thursday at 6 p.m. on Pac-12 Network.

· Saturday’s game is an all-access show for FS1 showing the behind the scenes of both programs on game day.

· Tres Tinkle (Missoula, Mont.) has scored in 88 consecutive games and is one contest shy of tying Mel Counts for the OSU record. He’s also 11 free throws short of Mel Counts all-time record in that category – Tinkle has 532.

· Tinkle has 2,097 points – 75 short of Gary Payton’s school record.

· Tinkle is the only player in the Pac-12 in the top 10 for scoring, rebounding, assists and steals.

· Kylor Kelley (Gervais) leads the Pac-12 and is second in the nation in blocked shots per game (3.7). He already owns the school record for blocked shots with 189.

BASKETBALL (Women)

· The team (19-5, 7-5 in Pac-12) plays its next four games on the road – the first time OSU has played four true road games since January 2017.

· Friday’s 7 p.m. game at USC is on the Pac-12 Network and Monday’s 6 p.m. game at No. 7 UCLA is on ESPN2.

· The team plays back-to-back games on the road against top 10 teams – at No. 7 UCLA Monday and at No. 8 Stanford Friday.

· The Beavers have not played a team with a losing record since Dec. 18.

· Pivec is ninth for career scoring at OSU with 1,513 points – she needs 70 points to pass Annette Mollerstrom into eighth. Pivec is closing in on 1,000 career rebounds (967) and needs 35 to pass Tanja Kostic into second. And, she is fifth at OSU for career assists (469), 23 shy of passing Mercedes Fox-Griffith into fourth.

· Aleah Goodman (Milwaukie) continues to hold the career mark for three-point field goal percentage at .421 (177-420). Kat Tudor (Woodbridge, Calif.) is fourth at .401 (214-534)

· Taylor Jones (Forney, Texas) needs three blocked shots to pass Brenda Arbuckle (1983-84) as the school’s freshman record holder in the category – she currently has 45 and leads the Pac-12 overall.

· Head Coach Scott Rueck is one win shy of 225 career victories at OSU.

BASEBALL

· The Mitch Canham era officially opens Friday in Surprise, Ariz. Canham’s official title is the Pat Casey Head Baseball Coach at Oregon State in honor of a seven figure endowment from Beaver supporters Lee and Connie Kearney.

· Canham is the third head coach on opening day for the Beavers since 1973.

· The team takes an 11-game opening day win streak into Friday’s game vs. New Mexico in Surprise, Ariz. First pitch is at Noon PST. The rest of the Beaver schedule in Surprise is Saturday at 1 vs. Gonzaga, Sunday at Noon vs. Gonzaga, and Monday at 1 vs. BYU. All games are available via FloSports livestream (via osubeavers.com) and the Beaver Sports Radio Network.

· OSU is 35-5 in Surprise over the last six seasons.

· The first 11 games of the season are on the road matching the 2016 team’s opening 11-game streak.

GOLF (Women’s)

· Ellie Slama (Salem) is expected to participate in the Augusta National Women's Amateur April 1-4. The final round is played at Augusta National the following week.

· The spring season begins Monday, Feb. 24 and Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the Bruin Wave Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

GOLF (Men’s)

· The team will compete at The Prestige in Palm Desert, Calif., from Monday, Feb. 17 to Wednesday, Feb. 19

GYMNASTICS

· The Beavers are on the road this week to face No. 3 Utah on Saturday in Salt Lake City. The meet will be televised on Pac-12 Networks at Noon PST.

· The team is in the midst of five straight meets against teams ranked in the Top 13 in the nation.

· OSU’s Maela Lazaro (Aiea, Hawai’i) tied her career-high with a 9.925 to win the balance beam title last weekend against LSU and Arizona State. Isis Lowery (Melbourne, Australia) and Kaitlyn Yanish(Chandler, Ariz.) each posted scores of 9.925 on the floor exercise to tie for top honors on the event.

· The program received another official commitment early this week with the addition of Grace Johnson (Snoqualmie, Wash.). Johnson will join the rest of the 2020 recruiting class in Corvallis this summer.

· OSU remains on the road next week at California.

SOCCER (Women)

· Kevin Legg has joined the team as an assistant coach after previously working with Crossfire United FC.

SOFTBALL

· The team takes a 4-1 record to Houston to take on Dayton and Houston at the Houston Classic.

· Mariah Mazon (Tulare, Calif.) had a strong opening weekend in Las Vegas last week finishing with a .600 batting average, 1.000 slugging percentage and a .647 on-base percentage after recording nine hits – including three doubles and her first career home run – scoring one run and three RBI.

· From the circle, Mazon pitched her first career no-hitter against UNLV throwing nine strikeouts over the course of seven innings. She finished the weekend with 27 strikeouts through 23.0 innings pitched, a .30 ERA and one save.

· Nationally, Mazon sits as followed in the NCAA: 8. Strikeouts, T-10. Doubles, T-13. Hits, T-27. Batting Average, T-47 On-Base Percentage.

· Complementing Mazon in the circle was grad-transfer Trystan Melancon (Tomball, Texas). Melancon picked up a 2-0 record including a shutout in her Beaver debut against Southern Utah on February 7 after striking out 13 batters. She finished the weekend with 19 strikeouts through 11.0 innings and a 0.00 ERA. Melancon also sits tied for first in the NCAA for lowest ERA.

· Combined, Mazon and Melancon rank as followed in the Pac-12: 1. Lowest ERA (0.26), 1. Opponent Batting Average (0.92), 1. Fewest Hits Allowed (11) and 3. Batters Struck Out (46).

· In the NCAA, Mazon and Melancon are tied for eighth in shutouts.

· Freshman Xiao Gin finished her first weekend in the Orange and Black sitting second on the team in batting average (.353) after recording six hits, hitting two RBI and scoring one run. She also leads the team with two stolen bases.

· 2020 Signee Tarni Stepto (Sydney, Australia) was named a one of the 20 finalist for the Australian Olympic Softball Team set to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

WRESTLING

· Oregon State hosts two opponents in Gill Coliseum this weekend, facing off with Cal Baptist on Friday night before grappling with conference opponent Little Rock on Saturday afternoon.

· l Friday’s match against Cal Baptist will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks at 6 p.m. PT, with Rich Burk on the call and Ken Chertow providing analysis.

  • Brandon Kaylor (Bonney Lake, Wash.) continued his hot streak this past weekend as he picked up two decisions and improved to 14-5 on the season.
  • At 125 pounds, Kaylor enters this week’s rankings for the first time, slated at No. 33. After collecting consecutive decisions last weekend, Devan Turner (Dixon, Calif.) improved to No. 10 at 133 pounds.Grant Willits (Pueblo, Colo.) remains at No.25.
