Oregon State didn't allow any video shooting other than the opening stretch today, so no practice highlights today:(....

Day 7 Practice Nuggets - Reser Stadium - Full Pads

For the second straight day, the Oregon State football team took to the friendly confines of Reser Stadium in what was an atypical August day with temperatures in the low 70’s, a lot of cloud cover, and a solid breeze.

It's good to be back... After @Mitch Monge held down practices for a few days, yours truly was back in Corvallis for what was a very exciting day. For the second straight practice, the Beavers were in Reser Stadium and today, the team really ramped up the intensity. Whether it was 11-on-11 work, 7-on-7 drills, special teams, or individual drills, the Beavers attacked today’s practice with a lot of physicality and energy.

Here’s a look at the first-team defense:

DE: Simon Sandberg

DT: Elu Aydon/ Isaac Hodgins

DE: Lamone Williams

OLB: Hamilcar Rashed Jr.

ILB: Shemar Smith

ILB: Avery Roberts

OLB: Andrzej Hughes-Murray/Addison Gumbs

CB: Isaiah Dunn

S: Jeffrey Manning Jr.

S: Omar Hicks-Onu

CB: JoJo Forest

Nickel: Jaydon Grant

- The defense had a really strong day today, perhaps their best day in fall camp. Whether it was the defensive line consistently holding Jermar Jefferson, Calvin Tyler Jr., and BJ Baylor to 2-3 yard runs, the secondary locking down receivers, or the linebackers coming up to provide some pop, the defense came ready to go today. While they weren’t perfect by any means, it was a nice change of pace to see the defense disrupt the offense and get into the backfield.

- Another area that was particularly impressive on the defensive side today was the vocal intensity. There were a couple of times where the defense came up with big plays and stops, and the players definitely made sure everyone in the stadium knew they had made a big play.

- In terms of the individual drills that the defense was focusing on today, tackling and wrapping up were among the most practiced. As we all know, the Beavers need to take a step forward in that area on defense in 2019, and it seems that the defenders have really embraced a physical and attacking mindset. Let’s hope that leads to better and more consistent tackling on game days as the Beavers are showing signs that they’ve improved vastly.

Here’s a look at the first-team offense from today:

QB: Jake Luton/Tristan Gebbia

RB: Jermar Jefferson

WR: Isaiah Hodgins

WR: Tyjon Lindsey

WR: Kolby Taylor

TE: Noah Togiai/Teagan Quitoriano

LT: Blake Brandel

LG: Gus Lavaka

C: Jake Levengood

RG: Clay Cordasco

RT: Brandon Kipper

- The tight ends really stood out to me today. Between Noah Togiai, Teagan Quitoriano, Isaiah Smalls, and the emerging Luke Musgrave, the Beavers are loaded at this spot and should feel really good about where they’re at. Togiai is feeling as healthy and confident as he ever has, Quitoriano and Smalls have grown leaps and bounds from last season and Musgrave is making a strong push to not redshirt this season. There’s still work to be done, but position coach Brian Wozniak is pleased with where the group is at.

- In terms of the quarterbacks, both Jake Luton and Tristan Gebbia had solid days. In terms of an edge, I’d give it to Luton as he was more crisp and accurate during the 11-on-11 work. The Beavers elected to give all their quarterbacks minus Jackson Chryst the opportunity to rotate during teamwork, so there wasn’t a ton of direct back and forth between Luton and Gebbia.

- As far as the individual drills go, there was one run by Lindgren that really caught my eye. The quarterbacks were in an approximate 10x10 square area and followed Lindgren’s directional shifting commands for 20-25 seconds before releasing the ball. I found this drill particularly interesting as it was geared toward keeping the eyes up and feet moving in the pocket. Luton and Gebbia were stellar in this drill while Nick Moore and Chryst also showed some nice footwork as well.

- Another drill that the quarterbacks worked on was the endzone fade. The various QB’s took the ball at the 10-yard line and fired to the deep right corner of the endzone. Luton was the most precise at this drill as well, but Gebbia had a few solid throws as well.

- Taron Madison continues to impress in his limited reps. While the true-freshman back is somewhat low on the pecking order with several established guys in front of him, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get more opportunities in the coming practices. Lindgren highlighted him post-practice, noting that he’s grown leaps and bounds from where he was in the spring and that he’s been impressed with where he’s at. Madison managed to break several 10-15 yard runs during 11-on-11 work and continues to be a guy that hits the hole hard, and with surprising speed.

Special Teams

- Jordan Choukair had himself a solid day as he went 3-for-3 on attempts. His first two came during 11-on-11 work as he hit from approx. 25 and 30 yards. But his most impressive kick of the day came to conclude practice as Coach Smith brought the team to the 25-30 ish yard line and told them that practice would be over and they’d have the rest of the night off if they had a clean snap and Choukair hit with the entire team surrounding. Choukair nailed the 35 ish yard kick to send the team home early and wrap up day 7. He was the only kicker to attempt field goals today…

- The Beavers worked on punt return drills for a portion of practice and Champ Flemings and Lindsey were the main guys handling the return duties. Both have a lot of moves in the open field and have the speed to turn nothing into something quick.

- In terms of kick return drills, Jesiah Irish had the highlight of the day as he took one all the way back, leaving several Beaver defenders in his wake. Irish has some wheels and it’s impressive to see him in the open field.

Injury Report

- Jalen Moore remains on crutches. However, for the majority of practice he elected to hold them rather than use them, so I’m not overly concerned.

- Jordan Whittley wasn’t at practice today… I’ll look for him tomorrow and get an update from Coach Smith.

David Morris and John McCartan spent practice working out on the sidelines in full pads. Both did some high-intensity sprints and appear to be closer to making their return to full time duty. Like Moore, I’m not overly concerned with these two guys as they’re nearly back.

- Artavis Pierce was at practice and was dressed, but didn’t participate.

- Anthony Gould is still on crutches. Unlike Moore, he was heavily using his. Look for Coach Smith to provide an update following tomorrow's practice.

- Trevon Bradford is getting closer to a return. While Bradford didn’t participate, he was right near the receiver/offensive huddles for most of the practice and kept Gould company when he wasn’t. Lindgren spoke about Bradford following practice and noted that he’s the type of guy who won’t need much acclimation once he’s back on the field. Smith should be able to offer some more clarity on when the Oregon City native will return post-practice on Friday.
