Day 12 Practice Nuggets

- Let’s start with the biggest news of the day… Sophomore safety David Morris returned to the field and participated in 7-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills for the first time in fall camp. The 6-foot-3, 210 pound playmaker has been out of commission for some time, and to see him take the field and thrive is certainly welcome news. While he didn’t get a ton of reps, he looked very good when he was on the field. Whether it was calling out offensive tendencies, flying around the back end, or being physical at the point of attack, Morris made the most of his reps today. With Morris starting to log more practice time, it’s likely a matter of time before the Sherwood native rises back up the depth chart and takes his place with the 1st unit.

- While Morris’ return was the biggest storyline of the day, another important one was the emergence of Jack Colletto. The 6-foot-3, 236 pound sophomore has been spending most of his time at inside linebacker since his slight position tweak to start fall camp, but today was the first time we’ve seen Colletto do what he does best… score. The Beavers worked on the Wild Beaver today, using Colletto as the mobile quarterback during the goal line offense, and boy he didn’t disappoint. Colletto managed to score three times as the goal-line QB and showcased why the coaching staff is so high on him as he showcased his ability to find the endzone, often times through multiple defenders. In addition to working as the mobile QB, Colletto made some impressive plays from the inside linebacker spot today, showcasing his ability to deliver a powerful hit… Could we be looking at Oregon State’s next Iron Man?

- The receivers and defensive backs had a really nice back and forth today. Oregon State didn’t do a ton of 11-on-11 work today, instead choosing to focus more so on individual drills that featured multiple position groups. An example of this was the quarterbacks, receivers, and defensive backs working together on a passing drill. While the QB’s simply made the throws, the most exciting battles came at the point of attack between the receivers and corners. Whether it was Hodgins and Dunn, Wright and Taylor, or numerous other WR/CB pairings, it was a great back and forth battle that showcased both groups have grown in many areas from a season ago.

- James Rawls is getting better and better each day that I see him. The 6-foot-3, 263 pounder will certainly be a key cog in Oregon State’s defensive line rotation this season, and today he showcased why that’s going to be very exciting to watch. Twice during 11-on-11 work, Rawls managed to blow up the play and get into the backfield for two-would be sacks. With Jeromy Reichner on the shelf for the season, the Beavers need their new faces to rise up quickly, and if the past few practices were any indication, Rawls is well on his way to being a regular contributor on the line.

- Redshirt-freshman outside linebacker Riley Sharp stood out to me today… He’s a guy that hasn’t gotten a lot headlines in fall camp, but was largely running with the second unit today, and was impressive doing so. He tallied a sack during 11-on-11 work from the outside spot and showcased great speed and footwork.

- True-freshman cornerback JoJo Forest continues to show why the coaching staff thinks so highly of him as he tallied a pick-six off a tipped pass during 7-on-7 work. Forest has been working with the first team defense for several practices now, and it’s clear that he’s well beyond his years in terms of maturity and feel for the game.

Here’s a look at the first-team offense from today:

QB: Jake Luton

RB: BJ Baylor

WR: Isaiah Hodgins

WR: Tyjon Lindsey

WR: Champ Flemings

TE: Isaiah Smalls/Noah Togiai

LT: Blake Brandel

LG: Gus Lavaka

C: Nous Keobounnam

RG: Clay Cordasco

RT: Brandon Kipper

Here’s a look at the second team offense:

QB: Tristan Gebbia

RB: Calvin Tyler Jr.

WR: I’Shawn Stewart/ Kolby Taylor

WR: Andre Bodden

WR: Jesiah Irish/Aaron Short

TE: Teagan Quitoriano/Luke Musgrave

LT: Joshua Grey

LG: Onesimus Clarke

C: Brock Wellsfry

RG: Jake Leavengood

RT: Jaelen Bush

- Quick note on true-freshman RB Ta’Ron Madison… He’s a guy that doesn’t get a ton of reps during the 11-on-11 or 7-on-7 work, but when he does, he makes sure that he’s being noticed. While it may be tough for him to crack the running back rotation early, he’s an explosive runner. During 11-on-11 work, Madison took an inside handoff and reached the secondary before he broke stride, eventually needing two Beavers to bring him down. He’s a very physical runner and his speed is sneaky good… Still raw in a lot of areas, but the potential is definitely there…

- Luton was only quarterback to take reps with the 1’s during 11-on-11 work today. While Gebbia received a healthy amount of reps during the session, his were with the second team offense. Neither QB really stood above the other today, but both showcased nice touch on the deep balls. With Aidan Willard and Nick Moore also taking their dose of reps, the Beavers are still having a bevy of bodies rotate through the QB spot.

Special Teams

- Not much to report on in terms of special teams today… Oregon State didn’t attempt a field goal during practice as they focused largely on kick and punt returns during the special teams portion of practice. Lindsey and Irish continue to be the mainstays in this area, regularly making big returns look relatively easy with their shiftiness and speed.

Injury Report

- Receiver Trevon Bradford is really really close to a return. Smith noted last week that he thought there was an outside chance that the Oregon City native would be ready by the end of this week, and if today was any indication, he appears to be on schedule. Despite not participating in the live work, Bradford was fully dressed, had his helmet on, and was with the receivers for most of the day. While he spent a fair amount of time on the exercise bike, it’s a welcome sign to see him be dressed in full pads and sporting a helmet.

- Tight end Noah Togiai didn’t finish the day as he appeared to ding his right shin during 11-on-11 work. While it didn’t look serious, his right shin was wrapped with ice to close practice. Togiai was sporting a big smile on the sideline, so I’m not too worried here, likely just a turf burn or light bruise.

- Safety Jalen Moore was dressed but didn’t participate. Smith confirmed recently that Moore has been dealing with a slight hamstring issue, but that it wasn’t serious. Moore has shed the crutches that we used last week, but still appears to be a day or two from returning to the field.
