Apologies for the lower quality video today, I am getting my new phone tomorrow.

Nuggets from Day 10 fall camp:

The Beavers were in Reser Stadium once again, following the closed scrimmage last Saturday. Head coach Jonathan Smith said he was impressed with the reps during the scrimmage, especially the defense.

The defense was impressive again today, so we’ll start with a look at the first team defense.

DE: Isaac Hodgins
DT: Elu Aydon
DE: Lamone Williams
OLB: Hamilcar Rashed Jr.
ILB: Shemar Smith
ILB: Avery Roberts
OLB: Andrzej Hughes-Murray/Addison Gumbs
CB: Isaiah Dunn
S: Akili Arnold/Jeffrey Manning Jr.
S: Omar Hicks-Onu
CB: Kitan Oladapo
Nickel: Jaydon Grant

The good news for the Beavs is that David Morris was in full pads and practiced in individual drills and 9-on-7 (inside run). This is the most I’ve seen Morris in action all camp, and he looked ready to ball. He did not partake in 7-on-7, but he’s probably just being brought along slowly.

Isaac Hodgins was back to fully participating today and looked very fresh. Him and Doug Taumoelau had a nice run stop in the backfield for a loss.

Jonathan Smith mentioned after practice that the defense had five straight three-and-outs during Saturday’s scrimmage, and that he was very happy with the group.

Lamone Williams figures to be a key for this unit, and he made a stop in the red zone with Omar Speights to stop a score.

Shemar Smith showed that “thumper” ability—as Avery Roberts put it last week—as he stopped a rush at the goal line. Smith hit the A-gap with a perfectly timed blitz and stood up the running back.

The next play, it was Speights again on a stop, this time with Elu Aydon. This was key because it was 3rd down, and the defense celebrated accordingly. There was a lot of energy and drive defensively throughout the day.

During 7-on-7 drills, Hamilcar Rashed read a screen all the way, and stayed with the running back, forcing a pass breakup. Rashed’s leadership and knowledge are very important to this defense.

Jeffery Manning Jr. is another guy who has been banged up recently, but made a really nice pass breakup. Manning Jr. is still working back to full health, but has been rotating in when he can.

Avery Roberts showcased his pass-coverage ability during 7-on-7, breaking up a pass on an out route. Roberts deflected the pass, and it fell just past Shawn Wilson’s outstretched arms incomplete.

Akili Arnold looked strong throughout practice, but beat BJ Baylor during Blitz Pickup drills. Andrzej Hughes-Murray also had a nice pass rush when he beat Kipper on the outside.

The Offense was sharp today as well, and the QB race continues to heat up. Tristan Gebbia has been looking sharper than previously as fall camp has progressed, but it still seems like Luton’s job to lose (just my opinion).

Here’s a look at the first team offense.

QB: Jake Luton/Tristan Gebbia
RB: JBJ Baylor
WR: Isaiah Hodgins
WR: Tyjon Lindsey
WR: Champ Flemings
TE: Noah Togiai /Isaiah Smalls
LT: Blake Brandel
LG: Gus Lavaka
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Clay Cordasco
RT: Brandon Kipper

Champ Flemings showed off his speed with a jet sweep off the edge first play of practice. Offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren loves to utilize this play because of the misdirection that occurs with the defense, and I expect to see more of it closer to game one.

Jermar Jefferson and Kolby Taylor were on stationary bikes for a majority of practice. Coach Smith said that it’s nothing major, just minor tweaks, or bumps and bruises from the scrimmage. He said his entire staff has been very cautious with injuries all camp. Artavis Pierce was in full pads, but did not participate in team drills.

BJ Baylor received work with the one’s today, and ripped off several nice rushes for about 18 total yards on his first two carries. Baylor has shown major improvement throughout spring and fall camps, and will be pushing for more playing time.

Tristan Gebbia completed a 25-yard pass to Andre Bodden during a two-minute drill. Bodden was able to catch the ball just short of the end zone, while maintain possession and a foot in bounds. Gebbia then followed that up with an out route to Isaiah Smalls for a touchdown.

The Luton-Hodgins connection was prevalent once again. The senior QB found Hodgins as he ran past the cornerback for a completion of 40 yards. Luton then connected again with the junior receiver on an out route, which was marked just short of the goal line.

Luton found Hodgins again in 7-on-7 on a crossing route. Hodgins found a gap behind the linebackers but short of the safeties, and was able to snag a perfectly thrown ball.

Gebbia was impressive again in 7-on-7, connecting with Jesiah Irish on a deep post route. The Nebraska transfer also found Aaron Short on a deep ball for a score. Short got behind the defense on a clear miscommunication, allowing the would-be touchdown.

Aaron Short has been a popular target all camp, and received a good share of throws today, especially from Gebbia. Short and Andre Bodden have proved that there is solid depth at receiver behind the starters.

Speaking of Bodden, he was the result of another completion with Gebbia near the end of practice. Gebbia stepped up into pressure, and completed the post with a very tight window of opportunity.

BJ Baylor also impressed in the passing game, taking a pass from Luton that was just behind him, and catching it with one arm while falling over backwards. Baylor has improved multiple facets of his game.

The offensive line was solid, especially the first group. The unit did not allow very many pressures. One player that stood out to me was Clay Cordasco. He did a very good job in blitz pickup, handling a hard blitz from Omar Speights. Cordasco kept his feet beneath him, and kept Speights away from the QB.

Special Teams: Jordan Choukair and Jake Scarton each attempted one kick from within 30 yards, and both made their attempts.
