Happy Thursday Edgers!
PRACTICE HIGHLIGHTS
Interviews with Tibesar, Sharp, & Wright
NUGGETS
- After completing the acclimation process over the first five practices, the Oregon State football team officially donned full pads for Thursday's practice session. The full pads definetly brought a little extra energy as you could tell the intensity was turned up by hitting full speed.
- Of note, defensive coordinator Tim Tibesar said post-practice that wide receiver turned defensive back Jesiah Irish has moved back to receiver.
- One play that was particularly impressive to me today came from defensive back Rejzohn Wright. Matched up in single coverage with the 6-foot-2, 223-pound Makiya Tongue, Wright was able to force an incompletion by playing tight coverage and being extremely physical. Tongue obviously has a few pounds on Wright, so seeing him be able to jar the ball loose is really a credit to his talent and technique. He's arguably one of the more impressive guys in fall camp so far and I'm excited to see him get an extended run this season.
- Speaking of the secondary, they continue to showcase how far they've come over the past few seasons... long gone are the days of inadequate depth and talent, as the Beavers have a room full of guys capable of starting on Saturdays. Tibesar spoke about the depth and talent at the position today, saying it was the best since he's been here and that's steadily becoming more evident as they're starting to fire on all cylinders. The communication is really top-notch amongst the group and I credit the leadership and Blue Adams for holding the room to a high standard in the offseason.
- As far as the quarterbacks go, credit goes to Tristan Gebbia who was arguably the most consistent of all the guys today. With Gebbia mostly running with the ones and Sam Noyer mostly with the twos, Gebbia had the more efficient day. He linked up with Luke Musgrave, Tyjon Lindsey, and Silas Bolden for touchdowns during 11-on-11 redzone work and looked quite comfortable out there. With Noyer running with the twos, he wasn't quite as efficient as we'd come to expect, but he still connected with Trevon Bradford on a perfectly placed deep fade during the same drill. Sam Vidlak & Chance Nolan also received reps with the first and second teams as well, with today being a bit more of an equal split amongst the four than earlier in the week. Nolan connected with Kanoa Shannon for a touchdown during the redzone work as well...
- Seeing Addison Gumbs take live reps with the second-team defense at outside linebacker was really good to see today. Gumbs' injury history is well documented, so seeing him back at full speed was a sight to see. It took him a total of one play to showcase his top-tier pass-rushing ability, breaking into the backfield and landing a would-be sack on Noyer. The training staff is still being very careful with him, but we got a glimpse of his elite pass-rushing ability today and if he's able to stay healthy, he'll be a force this season.
- Another positive note for the defense today was seeing them hold their own against the offense during the extended periods of 11-on-11 work that was exclusively in the redzone. Several times the offense had to settle for field-goal attempts after being stopped in three plays and that's a good sign for a defense that needs to get off the field more this season.
- Speaking of the defense, you could tell they were really excited to be out there hitting with full pads. The tackling was largely on point and that's always a good thing to see early in camp...
- Today was one of the first times we got to see Damir Collins get some run with the second and third units. He's still getting a feel for the college game, but his ability as a pass-catcher was evident today as he showcased his receiving ability several times and turned them into decent gains. Hard to know if he's going to get a ton of reps this fall, but it's nice to see him working his way into the mix.
Special Teams
- Everett Hayes had himself a solid day out there today, hitting several kicks from the mid-'30s, while also knocking one home from 41 yards out. He missed a 43-yarder, but he's been extremely consistent this camp and I don't expect that to change. Hayes could be in line for a very consistent and accurate season...
- Luke Loecher and Josh Green are both still trending towards being listed as "or" on the depth chart. With each guy bringing something a little different to the table, the Beavers have the luxury of being able to choose which punter fits them best at the moment. Both have shown really solid play in camp, but with each one using a different kicking foot, the ball comes off differently and that's created a nice range of punting options for Smith and Co.
- Champ Flemings and Anthony Gould appear to be the leaders in the clubhouse to handle kick/punt return duties this season. Both have really good vision as runners with the ball in their hands and have really good speed.
Injury Updates
- John McCartan, Jaydon Grant, Teagan Quitoriano, Shane Kady, and Keonte Schad were held out of practice today. We'll get to talk to Smith following Saturday's scrimmage, but none of these injuries are considered long-term. Tibesar said today that he hopes to get Schad in the defensive line rotation soon after being limited to start spring with a knee issue.
