a few are lamenting some of the new commits but I'm on board with what I see as Andersen's strategy. And it's quite a change as we all have noted. It sure seems like there's a long term master plan at work (finally).
..... he brings a new back into the mix .... (IMO)
-this not only shores up a need for a bruiser/every down back but also shows that no one can rest on their spot on the depth chart. Bruised egos? Too bad, OSU is now big boy football, produce or take a seat and wait your turn. This is establishing a new culture for OSU. GA sure seems (sorry JP, there's that word again) to bringing in some hard-hitting guys. Finesse? Leave that to the other guys.
-we will be using a lot of backs, not just one guy, a pleasant change. I'd boldly (light sarcasm) predict that you will even see more than one QB getting playing time even if everyone's healthy. Never could understand, for example, leaving Mannion (and Ward or Woods) in in basically hopeless games or with big leads. Culture change, everybody be ready to go in on the next down, no more backup QBs not being able to find their helmet.
-This will not be lost on the players on this roster or recruits ... if you show results you will play right now. Woods had a good spring as did Brown, but this staff didn't rest on that when a bruiser became available.
Two in-state guys who may not be on everyone's short list ...
-we're hitting Oregon hard and it also sounds to me like Andersen gave these guys (and others) "can we get you on board now, or should we just consider that an open slot?" ... not what we heard so many recruits relate in the past, "well, think it over and do what's best for you." No more sleeping on an OSU offer (unless you're a jelly doughnut type), we will move on. You snooze, you lose. Grabbing a two star guy you like in May before he possibly blows up is far different than grasping at B or C list guys in January. Another long term/big picture strategy. Guys see a lot of hype and buzz on twitter and that's 100% a positive thing. Corvallis is becoming a football destination not a sleepy town that "may not be for everyone".
So far, no luck but, GA wants to get a QB (or two) sooner rather than later.
Big picture, master plan, energy, buzz and a staff that works together. Hallelujah.
This is still only five months in from being a stagnant mess of a program, losing its star QB and most of its defense, heading downwards in hurry. I think we'll win six-to-eight games this year. I never thought, at least in the past six years, there would come a day when 1) recruiting would be a hot topic in May (May?) and .. 2) now I worry about how long these guys will stay.
Let me also echo mosu in another thread and compliment President Ray for his vision and realizing (I go back to McVicar, ouch) that big time athletics befit a big time university.
oh, and PS .... another change .... we are going to SMASH Weber State. I don't think we'll be wringing our hands at halftime.
