GAME ONE STORY - Beavs win in a walk off vs Arizona
CORVALLIS, Ore. –KJ Harrison's RBI single in the ninth inning sent the top-ranked Oregon State baseball team to a 4-3 win over No. 9 Arizona Friday night at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Adley Rutschman reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a walk by Nick Madrigal and then third when Steven Kwan grounded out. That brought up Harrison, who singled up the middle on an 0-1 pitch from reliever Tylor Megill, who took the loss to drop to 0-2 on the year.
The win sent Oregon State to an 18-1 record on the season, matching the program's best start over 19 games, last achieved in 2013. The Beavers improved to 4-0 in Pac-12 Conference play and will enter Saturday's matchup on a 13-game win streak. Arizona, meanwhile, dropped to 16-5 overall and 2-2 in Pac-12 games.
The teams matched runs in the second inning. Arizona scored first on a single by Kyle Lewis. Oregon State followed that up with a sacrifice fly by Andy Atwood, who drove in Trevor Larnach from third. Larnach had opened the inning by doubling to left center.
Like the second inning, the teams matched each other offensively in the eighth. Arizona scored two in the top half of the frame, highlighted by a home run from Jared Oliva. The Beavers, though, tied it up thanks to a bases-loaded walk by Trevor Larnach and a sacrifice fly by Cadyn Grenier.
Luke Heimlich started for the Beavers and did not figure in the decision after allowing four hits and a run in 6 1/3 innings. The lefty struck out eight and walked three in his sixth start of the season.
Jake Mulholland picked up the win, improving to 2-0 after allowing two hits in a scoreless top half of the ninth.
