DAY 4 PRACTICE NUGGETS
By Mitch Monge

- Energy was high today inside Truax indoor facility as the Beavers donned full pads. With the sun shining on a brisk morning, OSU looked focused and engaged throughout the entire practice.

- Jake Luton was again the first quarterback to take reps for the offense. Although it has not changed much, here is what I gathered to be the most consistent first-team O.

QB: Jake Luton
RB: Artavis Pierce
WR: Isaiah Hodgins
WR: Champ Flemings
WR: Trevon Bradford
TE: Isaiah Smalls
LT: Blake Brandel
LG: Gus Lavaka
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Clay Cordasco
RT: Brandon Kipper

- Tyjon Lindsey did not practice today and seemed to be favoring his left ankle. Flemings was stellar in relief, catching numerous passes from Luton and Gebbia. Flemings had a catch in the right corner of the end zone falling out of bounds. It would’ve been a score, but head coach Jonathan Smith ruled it incomplete on the field.

- The 11-on-11 period was much more up-tempo, considering everyone was in full pads. There was a quick whistle, but bodies were still flying around.

- Jermar Jefferson took the first handoff of the team period and ripped of a 20+ yard run, starting left and cutting across the middle before being run down by Isaiah Dunn on the right side. Jake then had the pass to Flemings that was ruled incomplete. Jefferson took a handoff on the next play up the middle for five yards, and Luton eventually completed a play-action rollout pass to hit Smalls for a score.

- Jefferson and Artavis Pierce rotated in the first unit.

- Gebbia took the second team reps, with BJ Baylor and Taron Madison getting snaps in the backfield. Jesiah Irish, Anthony Gould, Kolby Taylor, and Aaron Short saw action in the second group at receiver.

- Gebbia’s first pass was a screen to Baylor that went for around 20 yards. He completed several other short routes, before the drive stalled and the third unit came in. Nick Moore ran the third unit, but Aidan Willard and Jack Colletto also got some reps.

- Willard threw three straight completions to I’Shawn Stewart in 7-on-7 when he saw reps. However, Willard also fumbled a handoff (only fumble of the day).

- The first team wrapped up the period, with Luton completing two big passes to Isaiah Hodgins: a post and a 10-yard curl, to the right and left sides, respectively. There has been a strong connection between these two all spring, building off the chemistry from last season (when healthy).

- Isaiah Smalls saw more action today, catching several passes and also doing an excellent job picking up blitzes and pass rushers. In addition to the touchdown catch, Smalls also caught a flat route from Luton that he turned up field for a nice gain, as well as a crisp 10-yard out from Gebbia that was spot on.

- BJ Baylor impressed today. He ripped off a 20+ yard gain on the right side before Madison came in for him. Baylor also caught three or four passes out of the backfield.

- The line did 1-on-1 drills with a ball carrier in the backfield. Blake Brandel looked solid, handling Evan Bennett. However, Brandon Kipper really impressed, and held his own; his size will be a huge factor come fall. Kipper is listed at 6’6” and is very clearly the tallest lineman out there.

- Calvin Tyler Jr. practiced today, albeit without pads on. He was with the running backs in individual drills, but it is clear he is taking it slow, and only running in a straight line with minimal cuts so far.

- Noah Togiai was seen in a walking boot after Smith said his ankle injury seemed minor. I’ll continue to monitor that and will as Smith for an update next time he meets with the media.

- The defense had much more energy today, but didn’t look as solid in team drills as the offense. Here’s who I gathered to be the first-team D.

DE: Jeromy Reichner
DT: Elu Aydon
DE: Isaac Hodgins
OLB: Andrzej Hughes-Murray
ILB: Shemar Smith
ILB: Isaiah Tufaga
OLB: Matthew Tago
CB: Isaiah Dunn
S: Jalen Moore
S: Omar Hicks-Onu
CB: Kaleb Hayes

- Reichner was injured early on in practice, but he will remain the starter as long as the injury is minor, which it appeared to be. Reichner was engaged and in good spirits all practice, but didn’t don shoulder pads or a helmet.

- In team drills, Jalen Moore picked off Luton, and took it back for six. Moore isn’t too much of a vocal leader, but definitely makes his presence felt on the practice field.

- Shawn Wilson probably had the best series of anyone on defense in the team period. Wilson blasted Aaron Short on a WR screen play from Gebbia. It would’ve likely been a fumble in a real game but the offense kept the ball. Wilson followed that up several plays later by coming off the edge on a corner blitz, and swatted Gebbia’s pass down at the line of scrimmage. He was fired up about that possession, and the energy is contagious throughout the defense.

- Shemar Smith’s had a play at middle linebacker where he read run all the way, filled his gap, and crunched Baylor at the line of scrimmage. The hit was loud enough to elicit some “ooooos” from anyone who was watching.

- Kaleb Hayes went down in a blitzing drill where he was blocked by Jefferson. He was slow to get up, but was back starting on defense in the next team period.

- In the 1-on-1 line drill I mentioned earlier, Elu Aydon dominated the drill defensively. Aydon tossed Levengood like a rag doll, and swallowed up the ball carrier at the line of scrimmage.... His next rep was against Brandel. Aydon held his own, fought off the block and made the tackle after the ball carrier gained only one yard. Brandel was visibly frustrated, but it didn’t affect him the rest of practice. Aydon still needs to get more pressure on pass rush situations in team drills, however his run defense has been impressive.

- It was good to see defensive lineman Simon Sandberg back practicing after tearing his ACL last fall. He was in pads for the first time this spring and went through some non-contact drills.
