PRACTICE NUGGETS - DAY 1

From BeaversEdge.com writer Mitch Monge

- Oregon State opened kicked off their 2019-20 campaign with the first spring practice Tuesday. The team wore shells (helmet, shoulder pads, and shorts), on a chilly morning at Truax indoor facility. The offense remained indoors all practice, while the defense practiced outside during some individual drills.

- The first-team offense that appeared during the first team drill gave the media a glance at potential starters, and although the team ran various formations and packages, this seemed to be the most consistent:

QB: Jake Luton
RB: Artavis Pierce
WR: Isaiah Hodgins
WR: Tyjon Lindsey
WR: Kolby Taylor
LT: Blake Brandel
LG: Gus Lavaka
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Clay Cordasco
RT: Brandon Kipper

- Trevon Bradford, Jermar Jefferson, Isaish Smalls, and Teagan Quitoriano all subbed in for the skills positions in the second set, with Jack Colletto being the second quarterback to take snaps. I expected Gebbia to get the second reps, but he was third, and made some nice passes.

- Quarterbacks: Jake Luton looked like the best QB on the field, but again he has the most experience, and it is only day one. However, Gebbia looked good on a lot of his throws over the middle of the field, but struggled with leaving several five-yard outs short of receivers. Colletto looked slower than all others in drop-back drills, with Luton having the fastest feet in the pocket.

- While throwing routes to receivers, Luton got the ball out much faster than any of the other quarterbacks. He was the most accurate, as well. Gebbia seems to have great chemistry with Lindsey and Champ Flemings. Flemings caught nearly every ball thrown to him from Gebbia, as did Lindsey.

- Flemings and Lindsey also stood out to me because they were both stopping on a dime... They clearly had the best footwork of the receivers, and Lindsey made several catches right at the sideline where he was still able to get up field after with good speed.

- Nick Moore looked good while throwing routes, and didn’t see much from Aidan Willard. Moore and Gebbia look about the same size.

- Offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren ran several different packages during team drills, spread and tight sets, as well as snaps from shotgun and under center. Luton’s snaps were primarily shotgun, whereas Colletto and Gebbia took more under center.

- Gebbia went through his progressions more than Luton, and seemed to be reading the defense, as opposed to Luton’s quick trigger. Gebbia completed two straight five-yard outs to Flemings (a route he struggled with earlier), and then connected with Flemings again on a 10-yard curl for three straight completions.

- Luton had several nice passes, including a 30-yard post route to Isaiah Hodgins, who used his big frame to make the catch between two defenders. Luton also hit Flemings on a streak down the right sideline… the ball went probably 35 yards in the air to hit Champ in-stride for a 75-yard touchdown.

- I’Shawn Stewart practiced today, after missing last season with injury. He looked quick and comfortable running routes.

- On the defensive side, the Beavers already look improved. I was very impressed with several defensive linemen, but here’s the first-team defense that took the field. Again, coaches were making numerous rotations but here is who took the field first:

DE: Isaac Hodgins
DT: Elu Aydon
DE: Andrzej Hughes-Murray/Jeromy Reichner
LB: Matthew Tago
LB: Shemar Smith
LB: Isaiah Tufaga
DB: Jaden Robinson
DB: Kaleb Hayes
S: Shawn Wilson
S: Jalen Moore
DB: Isaiah Dunn

- With the first-team offense running three receivers, the first set was a nickel package from the defense with five DBs. Jaden Robinson played the slot corner, and all the DBs were very physical at the line of scrimmage.

- Hughes-Murray started at DE for the Beavers, but Reichner quickly subbed in, which is why I listed them both. On Reichner’s second play, he flat-backed RT Brandon Kipper, en route to a sack.

“Got a few pressures on the quarterback, even on the first day,” Jonathan Smith said. “I think we got more depth there and some competition in that room, so for a first day, looked alright.”

- Overall, the defensive line looks vastly improved. Evan Bennett has a lot of lower-body explosiveness, and fires off hard. His build is similar to Isaac Hodgins currently, but Hodgins looks a little heavier. Hodgins also started off at defensive end, also seeing reps at tackle. He was firing off hard as well.

- Bennett has also been getting advice from several veterans, interacting mostly with Reichner and Miki Fifita.

- Shemar Smith seemed a lot bigger than last year, and is now “looking the part” of a solid middle linebacker... His legs are huge for a linebacker.

- The defense had the most energy, and Isaiah Dunn could be hear yelling “they’re 1-for-6” repeatedly on the defensive sideline, hyping up his teammates after several incompletions by the offense.

- Injuries: David Morris has a “light-hamstring” injury and will be limited. The team will be cautious with him… Noah Togiai has a minor ankle tweak that will be monitored… Hamilcar Rashed Jr. had a large brace on his left elbow and was limited in practice, but very engaged and vocal… Evan Bennett was seen on crutches after practice with ice on his right knee; I did not see the injury (it must’ve been when the d-line was outside) and no details or updates on that situation yet.

- Lastly, these players were limited in practice today, mostly participating in conditioning and non-contact drills: Addison Gumbs, Brock Wellsfry, Calvin Tyler Jr. (knee).
