OFFENSE

  • The offense still has work to do after the spring game; while they showed some flashes as a unit, the main issue that needs to be addressed is timing with the quarterbacks and receivers. I think that the defense is farther along than the offense at this point in time, but at the same time, none of the quarterbacks have separated themselves yet. I would wait to pass judgment on the offense as the team is still learning a new offense after four weeks together.
  • Quarterback Gabarri Johnson had the throw of the day as he scored the first touchdown on the day for either team, connecting with wide receiver Trent Walker for an eight-yard touchdown pass. Johnson showcased his scrambling ability to keep the play alive and found Walker all alone in the endzone as Mason White, who was in coverage, slipped at the top of Walker’s route.

  • I thought that Johnson could be a guy who could put himself into the mix for the starting role and he made the most of his opportunities in the spring game. Johnson struggled with some accuracy and timing issues, but at the same time, this was the second day he took live reps, which should no longer be an issue as he gets more reps. He has the best arm talent and running abilities out of everyone in the quarterback room.
  • Quarterback Dom Montiel strung together a couple of nice drives in the spring game against the third-team defense. He led one drive that resulted in a field goal and another in a touchdown for the orange team offense.
  • Running back Dyontae Navarette had a couple of long 15-yard runs with the second one resulting in a touchdown, which he was able to showcase his running ability in between the tackles for a score.
  • Running back Anthony Hankerson looks to be the front runner to be the starting running back heading into fall camp. In the spring game, Hankerson broke off a few long runs, one going for about 15 yards; he showed great patience and vision in his runs between the tackles and along the boundaries.
  • Hankerson and Jam Griffin are both head and shoulders above the rest of the running back room, and both will easily run with the first-team offense. They share very similar qualities and can be interchangeable in the offense; I think that they’re not RB1 and RB2 but rather RB1A and RB1B, which is a positive in the worst-case scenario if injuries were to occur to the room.
DEFENSE
  • John Miller came up with the play of the spring game, stepping in front of a Gevani McCoy pass for the only interception of the day. The LSU transfer Tygee Hill did a nice job dropping off his rush, reading the eyes of McCoy, and tipping the ball just enough for Miller to get his hands on it.
  • Wasn’t an amazing day for the pass rush, but a handful of times guys got into the backfield
    • Zakaih Saez ripped around the right edge of the offensive line for a near sack of McCoy, forcing a rushed incompletion and a turnover on downs on the first series
    • Really enjoyed hearing from Nikko Taylor after practice on Thursday, and his expectations to make a bigger impact showed on Saturday. He joined the sack party a few drives in around the left side of the formation
    • Northern Colorado Transfer Nick Norris got one of his own on an interior rush. He’s going to be an impact playmaker right away, he’s definitely got an edge to him…
    • Mathias Malachi-Donaldson followed up with his own a few plays later
    • Linebackers DJ Wesolak and Aiden Sullivan tracked down Travis Throckmorton on the edge with Throckmorton trying to scramble and outran him to the edge for the takedown.
    • Semisi Saluni rounds it out with a fourth-quarter sack on the interior
  • Saw quite a few quarterback scrambles today, overall the group was doing a good job of moving the quarterbacks off their spots and making them think twice about staying in the pocket, but overall I think the offensive line won the battle up front.
  • Tackling was pretty good today as well, not too much room to run between the tackles, the duo of Melvin Jordan and Isaiah Chisom did a good job tracking down runners and getting them on the ground. There’s one thing that is perfectly clear about this roster, this is a significantly better tackling team than the one we saw under Jonathan Smith a season ago.
