Ryan's Report on today's action
- The Oregon State Beavers took to the practice field at the Prothro Practice Fields/Merrit Truax Indoor Center for the second time in 2024 for the second spring football practice of the Trent Bray era.
Like the first day of practice, the second day wasn’t super intense, as the team installed schemes for the offensive, defensive, and special teams.
- Again, there is a similar emphasis, like in the last practice, on periods or practice two, with more emphasis on individual and drill work.
- Although it’s the first week of spring ball, the players look more comfortable in the new system with the installation periods. Observing practices, the offense is a more quarterback-friendly scheme that allows for easy completions to guys out of the backfield and across the field.
Special teams note
Max Walker looked great punting the ball today, had some short punts but when he got into a rhythm he was booming the football deep down the field. Walker is also the team’s backup kicker to Hayes.
So far, the defense's strength is the secondary and linebackers in spring ball.
- One player who caught my eye during today’s practice was Kobe Singleton, who had a pair of pass breakups against different receivers. Singleton could see a starting spot and more reps as spring ball progresses. He has been a standout on defense through the first week, along with Sai Vadrawale III, who also had a pass breakup against Jamai East today in practice.
- Melvin Jordan IV and Isaiah Chisom were making plays all over the field. Jordan IV had a pass breakup in practice.
- Over to the offensive side of the ball, newcomer Jordan Anderson has been seeing more of an expanded role in practices today. During team periods, he worked with the second-team offense and had a spectacular catch over the middle on a crossing route. Anderson could likely be one of a few newcomers in the wide receiver room that could see action right away.
- Since it’s still early in spring ball, the rotation is not quite as clear as they’re getting a lot of reps for guys on the roster. However, based on the first two practices here is what the general rotation appears to be:
- In 7 on 7’s, Gevani McCoy took first-team reps along with Wide receivers David Wells Jr., Jeremiah Noga, and Jamai East, running backs Damien Martinez and Jam Griffin, and tight end Jermaine Terry II.
The defense had Chisom and Jordan, Noble Thomas, Harlem Howard, Jaden Robinson, and Andre Jordan Jr.
- Ben Gulbranson took reps with the twos alongside Anthony Hankerson, Bryce Caufield, Jailen Holmes, and Tastean Reddicks. Gulbranson did take reps with the ones on Tuesday, but offensive coordinator Ryan Gunderson mentioned that all the quarterbacks will get opportunities to take first reps.
- Dom Montiel took reps third, Travis Throckmorton took reps fourth, and Jake Sanders took reps fifth in the rotation.
- Ben Gulbranson did take reps with the first team, and then McCoy took reps second in the team periods. The rest of the rotation for the quarterbacks also remained the same in the period.
- The offensive line rotation is from the first team personnel: Van Wells, Grant Starck, Tyler Voltin, Tyler Morano, and Flavio Gonzalez. Josh Gray is not available for spring ball, but by the time he is cleared, I think he will slot in somewhere for either Gonzalez or Morano.
- The 2nd team's offensive line appears to be Dylan Lopez, Jacob Strand, Nathan Elu, Jacob Anderson, and Jason White.
- The defensive line rotation is Thomas Collins, Nikko Taylor, Takari Hickle, and Semisi Saluni with the first team.
- Oluwaysei Omotosho, DJ Wesloak, Tygee Hill, and Nick Norris are the second-team defensive line personnel. Aidan Sullivan and John Miller are the second-team linebackers.
- The Beavers' secondary rotation during the team period was Howard, Robinson, Jordan, and Thomas, with Jack Kane rotating in.
- The second team's secondary rotation was Singleton, Amarion York, Vadrawale III, and Mason White.
None of these rotations are quite finalized, but as we get closer to the end of spring ball, if there is no movement, these likely will be the two-deep roster heading into fall camp.
Injury notes
Tight end Gabe Milbourn was seen on crutches and did not participate in practice. His status is unclear.
Darrius Clemons did not practice again today like the first day but is present.
QB Gabarri Johnson remains in a walking boot
