Hey Edgers!
Interviews with OC Brian Lindgren & TE Luke Musgrave
Interviews with Trent Bray & Jaydon Grant
Nuggets
- When we caught up with Oregon State head coach Jonathan Smith earlier this week to preview spring football, he was very excited about the overall depth of the squad. Entering the spring session, he really feels like there's good depth at all positions...
- We got a chance to see that depth and talent firsthand on Thursday morning as the media was welcomed to the Prothro Practice Fields on what turned out to be a beautiful first day for football.
- We won't see full pads until sometime late next week as the Beavers are beginning their acclimation period.
Here's a look at the first-team offense:
LT - Jake Levengood
LG - Marco Brewer
C - Brian Espinoza / Tanner Miller
RG - Taliese Fuaga
RT - Brandon Kipper
QB - Chance Nolan / Tristan Gebbia / Ben Gulbranson
RB - Damien Marinez
WR - Tre'Shaun Harrison / Tyjon Lindsey
WR - Zeriah Beason / Jesiah Irish
WR - Anthony Gould / Silas Bolden
TE - Luke Musgrave / Jake Overman
- In terms of the quarterbacks, it's a great thing to see Ben Gulbranson & Tristan Gebbia back to 100% healthy and out there. It's going to create great competition with Chance Nolan and I think they'll all push each other very well.
- Gebbia's long recovery has been well-documented as it's taken him about 14 months give or take to get back to 100%. He definitely looked sharp and right at home out there as he made a couple of nice throws and looked right at home within the offense.
- In terms of Gulbranson, I'm definitely excited to see what he can showcase this spring. Working back from a shoulder injury is never easy, let alone being a QB, so I'd imagine he'll get more comfortable as spring goes on. Keep in mind, it was Gulbranson who was arguably the most impressive quarterback last spring before going down with the injury.
- Both Gebbia & Gulbranson took reps after Nolan who took the first reps at quarterback today. Each guy brings a different skill set to the table, so it's going to be very interesting to see who's more efficient in moving the offense.
- Running back Damien Martinez caught my eye today as he got a healthy amount of reps in the backfield with Deshaun Fenwick not participating. I also didn't catch Trey Lowe today, but I imagine it's largely maintenance-related. In terms of Martinez, he definitely looks physically ready to compete right away and I'm very curious to see how quickly he's able to pick up the system.

Defense

DL - Sione Lolohea / Thomas Sio
DL - Simon Sandberg / James Rawls / Tavis Shippen
OLB - Jack Colletto / John McCartan
ILB - Easton Mascarenas
ILB - Jack Colletto
OLB - Ryan Franke / McCartan
DB - Rejzohn Wright
DB - Alex Austin
DB - Kitan Oladapo / Skyler Thomas
DB - Ron Harge III / Akili Arnold
- I'll try and get a solid look at the second & third-team guys in the coming practices...
- In terms of a defensive scheme note, we asked defensive coordinator Trent Bray post-practice about it and it seems like he's going to keep his options open as far as whether to run the 3-4 or 4-3 base defense.
- One notable thing that stood out from interviewing Bray was that you can tell he is so excited and anxious to put his own spin on the defense. "Aggressive & Attacking" are the two words he used to describe the differences and that Beaver fans will definitely be able to see the difference on Saturdays...
- When speaking about new cornerbacks coach Anthony Perkins, both Bray & Grant talked about how impactful his presence is going to be. Bray talked about how each guy will get more individual coaching as a result while Grant talked about the uniqueness of having two DB coaches, saying "it's like fire and ice" with Blue being the fire and Perkins being the ice. You can definitely tell that they're really excited about having Perkins in the fold to help elevate the secondary...
Special Teams
- In terms of the kicking game, the Beavers closed out the first spring session with Everett Hayes & Atticus Sappington handling the reps. Hayes was 2-for-2 on extra points and hit both attempts from roughly 35 yards out. Sappington missed a couple of attempts from the mid '30s...
Injury Notes
- Running Back Deshaun Fenwick was dressed but didn't participate. Likely just giving him a small workload this spring.
- Defensive Back Jaydon Grant also didn't participate as he wasn't dressed. However, he was out there almost acting like an additional coach helping guide the DB's. I'd expect that he'll have a relatively light spring compared to others, but when we caught up with him post-practice, he's definitely hungry to continue to improve.
- Defensive back Jaden Robinson was also dressed but didn't participate. Robinson, who had a shoulder injury that forced him to miss all of 2021, is expected to be limited throughout spring as he works his way back into the mix.
- We also saw defensive back Alton Julian doing some individual work on the sidelines while dressed fully. Smith said he's not going to be doing anything live during spring, but it's nice to see his recovery is going along well.
- I didn't see defensive lineman Isaac Hodgins out there today, I'll keep an eye for him next practice this coming Tuesday. Smith said earlier in the week that they're going to give him a very light workload in spring...
