The Oregon State Beavers took to the practice field at Prothro Practice Fields/Merrit Truax Indoor Center for the first time in 2024 for the first spring football practice of the Trent Bray era.

The first day of practice wasn’t super intense as the team was installing schemes for the offensive, defensive, and special teams.

Bray mentioned that this spring ball would have a longer install period than in years past due to the fact that they’re introducing a new scheme and have a lot of newcomers.

I should have a better idea of what the depth chart looks like for Thursday, but many guys got reps today.

The main focal points of today’s practice were punt coverage work, individual work, installs, 5’s on 5’s, 7 on 7’s, and some 11 on 11’s.

Punters Max Walker and A.J. Winsor handled punting duties in practice today. Josh Green did not participate, still recovering after surgery this offseason.

I tried getting down some of the offensive and defensive linemen, but they rotated through so many players and I wasn’t quite able to see all of them.

I saw that Grant Starck, Jacob Anderson, and Colorado transfer Van Wells were along the first-team offensive line.

Thomas Collins, Nick Norris, DJ Wesolak, and Oluwaseyi Omotosho rotated through the defensive line in practice.

Behind Damien Martinez, the Beavers rotated through several running backs including Anthony Hankerson, Jam Griffin, and walk-ons Jake Reichle, Gavin Haines, and Dyonate Navarette.

Reichle looks to have put on more weight and I liked what I saw from him in team periods with a couple of nice rushes.

Ben Gulbranson was the first quarterback taking reps for the Beavers in 5 on 5’s and 7 on 7’s followed by Idaho transfer quarterback Gevani McCoy primarily handling reps with the second team. Dom Montiel took reps with the third team, and Travis Throckmorton and Idaho State transfer quarterback Jake Sanders split reps with the fourth stringers.

Jordan Anderson practiced returning punts and was with the third-team offense.

I liked what I saw from Kobe Singleton and Amarion York who had a pair of nice pass breakups in the secondary.

The defense was making plays through the team portions of practices

Number changes to note

Nikko Taylor was wearing 17 and now is wearing 25

Isaiah Chisom was wearing 32 and now is wearing 9

Injury Notes

Missouri transfer quarterback Gabarri Johnson did not participate in the first day of practice and was seen in a boot; his status is unclear.

WR Jimmy Valsin III did not participate in the first day of practice; he was on crutches and wearing a brace. His status is also unclear.

Josh Green and Joshua Gray did not participate in practice today. Bray said post-practice that Gray wouldn’t be seeing action in spring…
