The biggest news from the offense today is that quarterback Gabarri Johnson is practicing for the first time in spring ball. Head coach Trent Bray hinted after the first two weeks of spring football that he could start practicing in the second half of spring ball.

Johnson didn’t take any live-action reps or during team periods but threw the ball to receivers and tight ends in practice. From what I saw, Gabarri throws well and is very accurate with the football; there weren’t many drops by his targets when he was throwing today in practice. As we continue through the rest of spring ball, we may likely see him take some reps in practice or potentially in the spring game.

Running backs Damien Martinez and Jam Griffin did not practice today. Martinez was not spotted at practice while Griffin was present but took no reps.

RB Anthony Hankerson took the majority of reps with the first team in place of Griffin and Martinez.

The rest of the quarterbacks who took reps today struggled in practice. Gevani McCoy and Ben Gulbranson made some excellent throws but couldn’t consistently push the ball downfield. The deep passing game continues to struggle in practices.

The running game couldn’t consistently get going in team periods, but Hankerson had a couple of nice runs, including a 30-yard run up the middle. During the team period portion of practice, Hankerson showed great speed and vision on several runs up the middle and toward the boundary; I expect him to be an essential part of the running back rotation, especially with his pass-catching abilities out of the backfield.

Quarterback Dom Montiel completed a couple of sidearm throws in practice with one pass that Bryce Caufield caught in team periods.

Wide receiver Trent Walker went over the top of defensive back Jaden Robinson for an acrobatic catch on a pass from McCoy. Walker looks entrenched as a WR1 heading into fall camp. Darrius Clemons has not practiced in team periods, but Clemons did do some individual work today.

Wide receiver Jailen Holmes had a few nice catches in practice, including one over the middle on a crosser for 12 yards. Holmes has been taking reps with the second-team offense, but I expect him to get some looks with the first-team offense headed into fall camp or at the end of spring ball. I like the speed that Holmes brings to the offense as sort of a guy like Silas Bolden or Anthony Gould, where you can put him in motion and let him use his speed to beat guys in the open field.

Defense via @tjmathewson
  • The best play of the day came from redshirt freshman DB Harlem Howard, who read the eyes of Ben Gulbranson looking right and jumped all over an out route and took it back for a pick-six.
  • I also really liked what I saw from ILB Aiden Sullivan, who also had a good nose for the football. Early on, he dropped into zone and nearly curled right into a slant route for an easy interception. He then did a nice job jumping into the backfield on a rollout right, chasing down Gevani McCoy and disrupting the pass. Howard was in on it too, jumping right in front of the pass, just like his earlier interception, and swatted it away.
  • The theme of the defense today was aggression. We saw a number of corner blitzes off the edge which threw off the timing of the quarterbacks, and balanced the pressure between the backfield and the defensive line.
  • Now, the DBs wouldn’t have had as good of a day if not for the defensive line. Takari Hickle, Tygee Hill, Jacob Schuster, and Olu Omotosho all spent a lot of time in the backfield, moving Gulbranson and McCoy off their spots
  • Omotosho had quite a sequence. It’s a second down late in practice, the offense is just outside of the red zone. Omotosho was left unblocked rushing off the left side, and he gets right to the quarterback for the sack. Now it is third down, Omotosho switches sides of the formation and beats his guy again for another sack, leading to a long field goal.
  • For the most part, the line controlled the running lanes as well. Any running lanes that opened up were on the perimeter.
  • Totaling it up for the day, the defense did not allow a touchdown, and very rarely allowed a play to develop past ten yards. The tackling was sound on all three levels in the second half of practice once they started allowing live tackling.
Special Teams
  • Everett Hayes made his only field goal of the day from 53 yards.
