Nuggets REPORT

BeaversEdge Spring Football Day 10

OFFENSE via @ryan_harlan7

The offense is starting to come along for the Beavers, as they moved the ball down the field with the run game against the defense. The passing attack for the Beaver offense wasn’t in rhythm through most of the practice, but likely due to a byproduct of the backup quarterbacks on the roster taking reps with the reps in practice.

Quarterback Ben Gulbranson did not practice today but was spotted in street clothes along the sideline at Reser Stadium. With Gulbranson not practicing, Gevani McCoy took the first-team reps at quarterback.

McCoy strung together a few passes and pushed the ball downfield in the team period portion of practice, connecting with tight end Bryce Caufield and wide receiver Jalien Holmes on a pair of completions over the middle. I thought McCoy had one of his better days in practice, but simultaneously, he struggled with fitting the football in tight throwing windows and was nearly picked off by Melvin Jordan IV on a throw over the middle.

Quarterback Gabarri Johnson continued to increase his practice workload as he gets closer to getting cleared for contact. Johnson took second-team reps in 7-on-7s and completed most of his passes to his receivers and tight ends. There were a couple of drops on some of his passes that weren’t his fault but rather the receiver, but Johnson has the best arm talent of all the quarterbacks and is very accurate with his ball placement.

Outside of Johnson and McCoy, the rest of the quarterbacks struggled with accuracy and saw reps in 7-on-7s and team periods. Quarterback Dom Montiel and Travis Throckmorton saw many of their passes dropped by receivers and tight ends.

The depth and talent in the running back room shouldn’t be significantly impacted by Damien Martinez's departure on Tuesday. Running back Anthony Hankerson took the majority of reps with the first-team offense, while Jam Griffin rotated with him in team periods.

I think we’ll still see the running back by committee approach with this offense, but the guys who I think will get the most reps are Hankerson and Griffin. Hankerson rattled off a pair of long runs in team periods today, using his vision and speed to bounce the ball outside along the sideline to move the chains.

Bray noted that he’s liked what he’s seen from Griffin and Hankerson, adding that they have similar skill sets and are dynamic in the run game. They are also willing to pass protect to pick up a blitzing linebacker, which sounds like an emphasis for both offensive coordinator Ryan Gunderson and running backs coach Thomas Ford Jr. They both show good vision and stay patient for small holes to develop, and they can explode through them to pick up yards in the run game.

Hankerson was arguably the most effective running the ball, while Griffin and Jake Reichle were the following two running backs who made the most of their reps in practice. Reichle had a long run up the middle in team periods that went for 20 yards.

It took until almost the end of practice to see some flashes from the defense. In their defense, most of the early work was to their disadvantage, with lots of 1-1 and 7-7 with corners and linebackers on an island.

The play of the day came from Joe Swen. The Beavers were doing red zone work with Travis Throckmorton under center, and Throckmorton tried to fit it in a tight window over the middle when Swen jumped the route from the right side of the formation, and with a full head of steam and a convoy of blockers, he ran it up the opposite sideline all the way into the end zone. That was by far the most fired up we saw either sideline for any play on the day.

Mason White also got in on the turnover action, taking advantage of a pretty terrible sequence from Dom Montiel. This time in a two-minute offense, Montiel had the pocket collapse around him and tried to sidearm it out of harm's way, but he threw it right to White, who saw the throw coming the whole way. It was a fitting way for the defense to end the practice, which again looked like a good unit in live reps. White also showed good composure defending a fade route earlier in practice, winning the hand battle with Jamai East to bat a pass away. Exodus Ayers also picked off a pass in 7-7, closely guarding Jailen Holmes.

The defense defended two two-minute drives at the end of practice. The second drive (noted above) ended in an interception. On the first drive, the offense, led by Gevani McCoy, marched about 35 yards into field goal range, where Max Walker knocked through a 37-yard attempt.

In the trenches, the defensive line got pushed around a little bit today. The Beavers’ OL was able to carve out multiple running lanes for Anthony Hankerson and Jam Griffin, especially effective in the red zone where both units scored a handful of touchdowns.

Calling the name of Gyrice Goodman for the first time, a transfer from Garden City CC in Kansas, after he jumped a crossing and nearly had his first interception as a Beaver.
