With fall camp now officially in the books, the Beavers now turn their attention towards playing Colorado State. OSU held their final practice before this weekend’s game against CSU in Reser Stadium. Here are the most newsworthy practice nuggets from Brenden Slaughter.
-After sitting out the media portion of practice yesterday, Ryan Nall was back with the first unit taking reps. I mentioned yesterday that Nall was most likely being saved as a precaution and today all but proved that. With so many RB’s on the roster, no need for Ryan to take unnecessary hits.
-Other than the players listed on the injury report earlier this week, everybody else was dressed and ready to go for the Beavers. It’s definitely a good sign to see that the Beavers don’t have any lingering or nagging injuries that could affect players come game day.
-Today the Beavers were giving nearly all of their running backs reps. Nall, Artavis Pierce Thomas Tyner, Trevorris Johnson, and Calvin Tyler were all taking reps with the 1st and 2nd team offenses leading me to believe that the Beavers will not shy away from giving their bevy of running backs reps. OSU is in a solid position having so many good running backs, and the question is, how will they distribute those reps on Saturday. Today the pecking order looked like this: Nall, Tyner, Pierce, Johnson, Tyler.
-In other noteworthy injury news, Seth Collins was dressed today but did not participate in practice. He is still sporting the splint on his right hand, but was in his jersey and shorts and was holding his helmet. He was standing near the coaches on the field watching practice during the time that media was allowed in. Seeing Collins dressed lends legitimacy to the fact that he will be back on the field soon.
-Aidan Willard and Conor Blount were both taking turns imitating CSU QB Nick Stevens in the scout team offense. Neither of them were particularly effective against the first team defense as they consistently got pressure on the quarterback and forced them into bad decisions. Manase Hungalu was the recipient of one of those bad decisions as he intercepted an arrant pass from Blount.
-There were a few new faces that rotated in with the first team defense today. Both Adam Soesman and Hamilcar Rashed took some reps with the first unit today. Based on seeing this, it leads me to believe that the Beavers will be rotating the front seven heavily while keeping the back end consistent.
-It was evident to me early on today that the Beavers are still focusing on their ground game first and foremost. By having a solid ground attack, they are hoping that it will open up the passing lanes for Jake Luton to make plays.
-Speaking of Luton, he looked very sharp once again as he was in full command of the offense. He was razor sharp from the moment that the media were allowed in practice and showcased a variety of short, medium, and long throws.
-For the second straight practice, the Beavers focused on red zone work. Today Luton got the majority of the work inside in the red zone, but Darell Garretson and the second unit got some work in their as well. Both quarterbacks were efficient with the ball, but Luton was slightly more poised and made the correct decision more times than Garretson. Based on Garretson continuing to get reps in the red zone, I’m starting to think that the coaching staff might have an ace up their sleeve with some special packages with Garretson. Time will tell whether or not I’m right, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Garretson out there at some point this season.
-Run-pass-options are still a focal point of OSU’s offense. Today the Beavers worked on short swing passes to get the ball in the hands of their talented running backs. There were numerous instances where both Tyner, Nall, Johnson and Tyler showcased their ability to catch the ball and turn upfield. Given how many horses the Beavers have in the running back stable, this might be a good way to get their playmakers reps.
-The first and second team defense flexed their strength on the scout team offense today. As I mentioned above, the scout team quarterbacks struggled with efficiency, but even more so than that, the defense is just getting a better jump and push on the line of scrimmage. Granted this is against the scout team offensive line, but the Beaver defense is proving to me that they are ready to show what they can do against someone other than themselves.
