CORVALLIS – Sports historians know it as the “transplanted Rose Bowl.”

Oregon State University is honoring the 75th anniversary of the iconic “Men of Roses” team with a celebration the week of theOct. 29 home football game vs. Washington State at Reser Stadium. Led by head coach Lon Stiner, No. 12 Oregon State defeated No. 2 Duke 20-16 in Durham, N.C., in what was considered a major upset.

January 1, 1942 marks the only time in the game’s 103-year history that it has been played away from the actual Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. The U.S. government prohibited large gatherings on the West Coast based on the fear of an attack on the mainland following Pearl Harbor. The game, after debate of it being canceled altogether; featured Pacific Coast Conference champion Oregon State against Southern Conference champion Duke. Ironically, Duke was led by quarterback and future Beaver Hall of Fame coach Tommy Prothro.

“It’s a privilege to recognize and celebrate this storied team with friends and family members of those involved in that game,” OSU interim athletic director Marianne Vydra said. “While we honor this team, it’s also a wonderful educational opportunity for Beaver Nation to learn about an era that affected so many people across the globe.”

During the week leading up to the Men of Roses game, bestselling author Brian Curtis will speak on campus about his most recent book, the “Fields of Battle.” Fields of Battle is a critically acclaimed book featuring the men who faced each other in that game and in many cases ultimately were on the same team on the battle fields overseas. Curtis will be hosting a public lecture at OSU’s Learning Innovation Center (Room 228) on campus from 4-5 p.m. Friday, October 28.

The cover of the game program will be a reproduction of the 1942 Rose Bowl-issued publication and there will be a display of memorabilia located at Parker Plaza (Fan Fair). The football team will pay special tribute to the Men of Roses team; more details to be announced next week.

The game will also mark the Beavers’ annual Military Day and Homecoming. Veterans and active military personnel can obtain tickets by following this link.

The Beavers and Cougars will kickoff at approximately 7:45 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
