DAY 5 NUGGETS:

Oregon State donned full pads for the first time of fall camp today. It was also the first day referees were brought into practice for 11-on-11 work and 7-on-7 drills.

Today, it was back to Jake Luton being the first QB to take snaps. Here’s a look at the first team offense.

QB: Jake Luton/Tristan Gebbia
RB: Jermar Jefferson
WR: Isaiah Hodgins
WR: Kolby Taylor
WR: Champ Flemings/Tyjon Lindsey
TE: Noah Togiai/Teagan Quitoriano/Isaiah Smalls
LT: Blake Brandel
LG: Gus Lavaka
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Onesimus Clarke
RT: Brandon Kipper

Jake Luton’s first pass of practice was picked off and returned for a score by Jaydon Grant. Not a great start, but Luton bounced back and had another solid day of practice.

Luton finished strong, connecting with Teagan Quitoriano on a play action rollout just at the end of practice. Quitoriano is rotating in with the one’s, as is Isaiah Smalls. Quitoriano was used more in the run game last year, so it’s nice to see his pass-catching ability as well.

Speaking of run blocking, Quitoriano pancaked Nashon Wright to finish off a run play. Quitoriano did a nice job of blocking through the whistle.

Tristan Gebbia was also solid today, and found Calvin Tyler Jr. on a screen pass, which Tyler took for about 15 yards. Gebbia also dropped a dime to I’Shawn Stewart on a fade route for another gain of 15.

Jack Colletto took reps at quarterback today for the first time all of fall camp. Colletto didn’t miss a beat, and was impressive for not taking any snaps during camp. Colletto started w a nice pass to Aaron Short, followed up by a 10-yard run on a zone-read play.

Colletto had one interception on the day, but stuck mostly to short passes and zone-read which he is most effective in.

Luton made a lot of good throws, and again found Tyjon Lindsey on multiple occasions, including a slant which Lindsey was able to turn into a 15-yard gain after the catch.

Luton also showed his mobility when he scrambled to escape a broken pocket, and found Champ Flemings. Flemings did a great job realizing Luton was in trouble, working back across the field, and coming back to the ball.

Aaron Short had another nice grab with Nashon Wright draped all over him. Short was able to keep both feet in bounds between Wright and the sideline.

The depth at receiver has been showcased all camp, and Andre Bodden made several nice plays today. His highlight was going up and high-pointing a pass over the outstretched arms of Shawn Wilson. Bodden did a great job going and getting the ball, and gained about 35 yards on the play.

Jermar Jefferson continues to just be an anchor in the backfield. There is a lot of rotations going on, and Jefferson consistently gains yards with the ball in his hand.

Coach Pitre mentioned after practice the luxury he has being able to rotate guys and keep legs fresh not only in games, but also in practice. Jefferson added that his body feels better now than at the same time last season. Between Jefferson, Artavis Pierce, BJ Baylor, and a healthy Calvin Tyler Jr., there is plenty of talent in the Beaver backfield.

Offensive Notes: Anthony Gould was on crutches with his thigh wrapped. No official update on his status yet… Nathan Eldridge was in full pads, but again remained on the sideline for team drills, expect him to back practicing within the next few days… Trevon Bradford was in shorts and a helmet today, just another sign he’s nearing his return… Jesiah Irish did not practice today, but was working out on the side, most likely precautionary…

For the Defense, they continue to look improved from a year ago. Amid the mass rotations, here’s a look at the first team D.

DE: Simon Sandberg
DT: Jordan Whittley/Elu Aydon
DE: Lamone Williams
OLB: Hamilcar Rashed Jr.
ILB: Shemar Smith
ILB: Avery Roberts
OLB: Andrzej Hughes-Murray
CB: Isaiah Dunn
S: Jalen Moore
S: Omar Hicks-Onu
CB: Kaleb Hayes/Jojo Forest
Nickel: Jaydon Grant/Shawn Wilson

Today was an impressive day for the defense, as Tim Tibesar’s group continues to impress. The group had a lot of energy today, and was flying around to the ball.

Avery Roberts has made a lot of tackles at middle linebacker, and is very strong up the middle. It seems that Roberts is in on almost every run stop, at least assisting on the play.

Freshman Jojo Forest took reps with the first team today, and held his own. He split time with Kaleb Hayes across from Dunn, which speaks volumes about how to the coaching staff sees him.

Additionally, Addison Gumbs ran with the second unit, and is practicing at full speed. Once Gumbs gets fully comfortable in the new system, I expect him to see the field quite often. He beat Jaelen Bush several times off the edge, and put pressure on the quarterbacks.

Akili Arnold came away with an interception today as the freshmen in the secondary continue to fit right in. Between the freshman trio of Arnold, Forest, and Alex Austin, the future of the Beavs’ secondary appears to be in good hands.

James Rawls stands out on the second team, and has the size to match up with Pac-12 o-linemen. Rawls is very strong, and uses power moves to try get off blocks quickly.

Freshman Kelsen Hennessy had a nice run stuff up the middle. He is another nice addition to the team, adding more depth on the defensive line.

Defensive Notes: Isaac Hodgins was working with strength coach Mike McDonald on the side during practice. Again, most likely precautionary as the Beavs will bring him back slowly from whatever is ailing him… David Morris was in full pads today, but again remained on the sideline. Seeing him in pads is definitely encouraging, as he should return to the field shortly. Morris and Jeffrey Manning Jr. have been training on the side together.

Special Teams: With the addition of kicker Jake Scarton, the Beavs have a true battle for the kicker position. Jordan Choukair was the first kicker to take reps, per usual. Choukair went 3-for-5 on the day, and one miss was off the left upright.

Scarton was also 3-for-5, with a miss off the left upright. Freshman Everett Hayes was 2-for-3, and freshman Jeffrey Nelson made the only kick he attempted.

I honestly expect Choukair to be the kicker for game one, but if struggles arise, I don’t think Jonathan Smith would hesitate to change kickers.
