FALL CAMP DAY 4 PRACTICE NUGGETS:

With the Beavers in full pads tomorrow, Day 4 of fall camp was still full of energy and competition.

First, however is the bad news. Jonathan Smith announced after practice that senior defensive end Jeromy Reichner tore his ACL in his left knee during Saturday’s practice, and is out indefinitely.

Both the quarterbacks looked very sharp today, and each had their best day yet of camp individually. Tristan Gebbia was the first QB to take reps w the offense at the start, and here’s who I gathered to be the first team offense today.

QB: Tristan Gebbia/Jake Luton
RB: Jermar Jefferson
WR: Isaiah Hodgins
WR: Kolby Taylor
WR: Tyjon Lindsey/Champ Flemings
TE: Noah Togiai
LT: Blake Brandel
LG: Gus Lavaka
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Clay Cordasco
RT: Brandon Kipper

Gebbia got off to a little bit of a rough start, but showed poise as he gathered himself and showed out the rest of practice. He had a nice completion to Noah Togiai on a play-action roll out. His ability to throw on the run is one of his strong suits.

Gebbia hit Togiai again on a post in traffic. He did a nice job of squeezing the ball in a tight window, as he has much of camp.

Jake Luton had fantastic day, and showed off his cannon once again. I was particularly impressed when he was on the right hash, and completed an out route to Kolby Taylor all the way across the field. Luton’s pass was an absolute laser, and right on target.

Luton and Taylor hooked up many times today, including on a fade from the slot, which Luton dropped right over Taylor’s shoulder into the bread basket. Luton also hit Taylor on another streak, a result of a miscommunication on defense.

During one-on-one drills, Isaiah Hodgins was dragged down by Isaiah Dunn while running a route. During the next period, the whole team watched a rematch of Hodgins and Dunn, with Luton at QB. Hodgins shook Dunn on a post corner, and Luton dimed him up for the score. Hodgins was mobbed and celebrated with teammates in the end zone, as the defensive coaches ran across the field and back as a result of the lost bet. The energy level was highest at this point of practice.

Luton also had a nice connection with Tyjon Lindsey today, connecting with him on a crossing route. Luton also had another pass a little behind Lindsey, but the dynamic receiver when up and got the ball as his body continued moving the opposite direction.

During the third-team 11-on-11, Taron Madison impressed with a 20-yard run, and then followed it up with a spectacular one-handed grab out of the backfield, which he took in for a score to conclude practice.

Just before Madison’s highlights, Nick Moore completed a 20+ yard dime to Aaron Short in tight coverage. Short high-pointed the ball and made a really nice catch.

Anthony Gould showed off his speed on a tunnel screen, but was caught from behind about 20 yards down the field, and had to be helped off the field. There was no update on the nature of the injury, and I’ll continue to monitor Gould’s status.

Clay Cordasco had a pancake block on Avery Roberts to open up a nice hole for Jefferson. Cordasco keeps on improving, and will be a major key for the o-line unit moving forward.

The Defense also had a solid practice, forcing several turnovers. Without Reichner, here’s what the first team defense looked like today.

DE: Lamone Williams
DT: Elu Aydon/Jordan Whittley
DE: Simon Sandberg
OLB: Hamilcar Rashed Jr.
ILB: Shemar Smith
ILB: Avery Roberts
OLB: Andrzej Hughes-Murray
CB: Isaiah Dunn
S: Jalen Moore
S: Shawn Wilson
CB: Kaleb Hayes
Nickel: Shawn Wilson

Doug Taomoelau showed out today, intercepting a deflected pass at the beginning of practice. On another play, freshman Jojo Forest broke up a pass, and Taomoelau snagged another pick on the deflection. Taomoelao has been impressive among what is a deep linebacking core.

Calvin Tyler Jr. had the ball stripped from him right at the whistle, and was recovered by Wynston Russell who returned it for a score. Linebackers coach Trent Bray went stride for stride with Russell on his way to the end zone.

Although he has been on the sideline, Jeffrey Manning Jr. is very vocal during practice. He could be heard supporting his fellow DBs during one-on-one drills with receivers.

Nashon Wright is fitting right in with the Beavs. He has been good in pass coverage, but today he forced a fumble on Kase Rodgers. The ball was recovered by the defense.

On a deep pass intended for Job Dockery, the pass was underthrown and was picked off by freshman Akili Arnold. The new defensive backs (transfers and freshman) have looked good early on in camp.

With the blow to Reichner, the biggest key for the team is going to be staying healthy. There are several bumps and bruises which are not uncommon, but the competition and depth have been impressive for the defense, and hope to remain that way.

I would not be surprised if we see David Morris back on the field this week. He seems very close to being ready, and I heard him vocalize his frustrations with being held out of drills again today.
