Fall Camp Day 16 Nuggets
Today was a short, light practice following Saturday’s scrimmage. The Beavs were back at Prothro practice field for a practice in helmets, but no pads. Most of the day was walkthrough and special teams, with a little 7-on-7.
There was no team work today, but here’s what I gathered to be the first-team offense post-scrimmage.
QB: Jake Luton
RB: Jermar Jefferson
WR: Isaiah Hodgins
WR: Tyjon Lindsey
WR: Kolby Taylor
TE: Noah Togiai/Teagan Quitoriano
LT: Blake Brandel
LG: Onesimus Clarke
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Clay Cordasco
RT: Brandon Kipper
Clarke filled in for Gus Lavaka, who injured his ankle Saturday. Lavaka was dressed, but was on the side with his position group. Again, Coach Smith mentioned that the injury was not serious, but is a situation to monitor.
Luton took most of, if not all the first team reps today. Gebbia worked with the second team o-line during situational drills and walkthrough. While this is similar to the rest of camp, it indicates that there were no major changes made since the scrimmage.
Trevon Bradford was back practicing today. Even though it was without pads, it was good to see Bradford working on individual drills with the receivers. Having Bradford back in the rotation will add another weapon to this offense.
The offense worked on situational special teams, including fourth down, Hail Mary, and clock management situations. It would be a good sign if OSU had to practice the kneel down more often for games this season.
OSU also practice a few trick plays at practice today. It will be interesting to see when, not if, Coach Lindgren uses these wrinkles in his offense.
There was some 7-on-7 work, and from the limited reps, Luton was crisp today.
Luton completed his first three passes of the session. He found Togiai on an out route, followed up by a completion to Quitoriano on a hook route over the middle. The route with Quitoriano had almost perfect timing, allowing Luton to squeeze the ball in between the closing ‘backers.
Luton then hit Kolby Taylor on a crossing route; however, Luton had to roll out after his first options weren’t available.
Tristan Gebbia had a little rougher day. He overthrew Jesiah Irish on a post route, and had a pass nearly picked off by Jojo Forest. Gebbia was a little rushed on his throws, but finished the day strong.
At the end of practice, Gebbia squeezed a ball to Champ Flemings for a completion right at the goal line. The pass was somewhat miraculous in the sense that it was nearly intercepted, but the ball somehow made it through the defender’s arm into Flemings’ outstretched hands.
Nick Moore had some nice reps today with the third team. Moore connected with Luke Musgrave on an out route. This was redemption for Musgrave, as he bobbled and dropped the pass on the play before.
Moore linked up with Isaiah Smalls on a quick slant route. Smalls was split out in the slot, a display of his versatility at the tight end position.
One pass from Moore that stood out was a quick out route to Job Dockery. Moore led Dockery perfectly as Dockery snagged that pass falling out of bounds. It was a really impressive catch from the athletic sophomore.
With Nathan Eldridge playing center with the two’s, it was Brock Wellsfry and Jake Levengood on either side of him as the guards. With Onesimus Clarke filling in for Lavaka, it will be interesting to see how the second team shifts around, and when Eldridge starts working with the ones.
To the Defense…
Here’s a look at the first team defense from 7-on-7 and the limited walkthrough reps.
DL: Isaac Hodgins
DL: Lamone Williams
OLB: Addison Gumbs
ILB: Shemar Smith
ILB: Avery Roberts
OLB: Matthew Tago
CB: Isaiah Dunn
S: Shawn Wilson
S: Omar Hicks-Onu
CB: Nashon Wright
Nickel: Jaydon Grant
During individual drills, I looked across to the second practice field where coach Blue Adams was throwing passes for his DBs to high-point and intercept. Adams tossed on way over David Morris’ head, and Morris laid out and made a diving one-handed catch. Morris is an athlete, and obviously a difference-maker for the secondary.
Morris worked with the second team defense today, as he gets back to full speed after missing the start of camp. The experience of having a player who has been with the program for three years working with the new, younger additions of the secondary is invaluable.
Jeffrey Manning Jr. had a walking boot on his left foot at practice. Manning Jr. started the scrimmage Saturday, but only participated in the first part. It seems as though he may have aggravated his injury, but we don’t know as no coaches were available to the media today.
In 7-on-7 work, surprisingly (to me) it was Gumbs and Tago instead of the usual Rashed Jr. and Hughes-Murray at the outside linebacker spots. Both Gumbs and Tago impressed during the scrimmage, and seem to be in the hunt for more playing time, if not a starting spot. The other side of the coin is that Coach Tibesar is working on playing different guys in obvious run vs. pass situations. It will be interesting to see the rotations with the first unit as game week approaches, especially with how the defense performed last Saturday.
Special Teams:
Tyjon Lindsey, Calvin Tyler Jr., Anthony Gould, and Champ Flemings all worked returning kicks. There were no field goals attempted, and Jeffrey Nelson was the primary kicker handling kickoffs.
