Note: No highlights, as today was only a walkthrough.

Day 14 Practice Nuggets/Scrimmage Preview

It was a cooler, breezy day from Reser Stadium as the Beavers had a walkthrough ahead of their first public scrimmage of the 2019-20 season. The Beavs were in shorts, jerseys, and helmets for their final practice of week three.

Athletic director Scott Barnes was in attendance at practice today.

Here’s a look at the first and second team offenses today as we head into the scrimmage.

First Team:
QB: Jake Luton
RB: Jermar Jefferson
WR: Isaiah Hodgins
WR: Tyjon Lindsey
WR: Kolby Taylor
TE: Noah Togiai
LT: Blake Brandel
LG: Gus Lavaka
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Clay Cordasco
RT: Brandon Kipper

Second Team:
QB: Tristan Gebbia
RB: Artavis Pierce
WR: Jesiah Irish
WR: Andre Bodden/Aaron Short
WR: Champ Flemings
TE: Isaiah Smalls
LT: Joshua Gray
LG: Onesimus Clarke
C: Nathan Eldridge
RG: Jake Levengood
RT: Jaelen Bush

Jake Luton was the first QB to take reps today, but Smith didn’t say who the first QB to take reps tomorrow would be.

Luton and Gebbia both looked sharp in walkthroughs today. Luton connected with Noah Togiai on a fade route down the left sideline. Luton was able to drop the ball right in the breadbasket, and was a very clean-looking play.

Luton also found Teagan Quitoriano on a post route over the middle. Luton and all the tight ends have had solid chemistry throughout camp.

Luton’s nicest pass of the day was one he squeezed just over the jumping Shemar Smith. Luton was able to put enough finesse on the ball to drop it into Tyjon Lindsey on the post route, and was a really well-thrown ball by Luton.

Luton came back to find Togiai again during 7-on-7, this time connecting on an out route. With the amount of time Togiai missed due to injury last year, it’s good to see him back in the swing of things—it looks as if he hasn’t missed a beat.

Gebbia also had a nice day. Gebbia found Jesiah Irish on a beautiful fade route. Irish used his speed to separate from his defender, and Gebbia hit him in stride for the completion.

Gebbia came back to Irish again later in practice, this time on a post route. Irish’s speed is a major weapon, and Gebbia looked good on his timing with the speedy wideout.

Luke Musgrave flashed again today as he got behind the defense once again for a would-be touchdown. Musgrave has found himself the result of several blown coverages this camp, but has also proved himself as a receiver.

Gebbia connected once again with Andre Bodden. The senior receiver has made a case to be on the two-deep depth chart come game one, and has been showing out in camp.

Nathan Eldridge did walkthroughs with the second team offense, and Coach Smith said to expect 20-30 snaps at the scrimmage tomorrow.

Trevon Bradford and Anthony Gould were also suited up today. Neither went through individual drills, rather working on the side with trainers. However, being in helmets shows they are taking a step toward getting back on the field.

Here’s a look at the Defense headed into the scrimmage.

First Team:
DL: Isaac Hodgins
DL: Lamone Williams
OLB: Hamilcar Rashed Jr.
ILB: Shemar Smith
ILB: Avery Roberts
OLB: Andrzej Hughes-Murray
CB: Isaiah Dunn
S: Jeffrey Manning Jr.
S: Omar Hicks-Onu
CB: Alex Austin
Nickel: Jaydon Grant

Second Team:
DL: Cody Anderson
DL: Jordan Whittley/Elu Aydon
OLB: Addison Gumbs
ILB: Omar Speights
ILB: Doug Taomoelau
OLB: Matthew Tago
CB: Jojo Forest
S: Akili Arnold
S: David Morris
CB: Kaleb Hayes
Nickel: Shawn Wilson

Didn’t get to see a lot from the defense today, as everything was two-hand touch, being in shorts and jerseys. Aydon and Whittley ran with the second team because the team didn't practice any sets with a true defensive tackle today.

Kyrei Fisher was in a helmet today for the first time during camp. Fisher isn’t eligible for the start of the season, but has been engaging with his teammates on the side. Today marked the first day Fisher was in anything other than a jersey and shorts.

Jalen Moore was back in shorts, jersey, and helmet today. Moore was on the sideline with the coaches, play-call sheet in hand, very engaged with the defense.

Simon Sandberg was on the side today, and Smith said after practice that Sandberg was the only for sure no-go at the scrimmage tomorrow. He didn’t go into details about the nature of the injury.

Shemar Smith had a sack at the beginning of team work. Granted it was just two-hand touch, Smith still busted through the line and gave Luton very little time to throw.

Three things to watch for tomorrow:

1. QB Battle: The race between Luton and Gebbia is closing, but Smith did not disclose who would be the first QB to take the field tomorrow. Luton has the upper hand due to his experience, but Gebbia has been closing the gap lately. Tomorrow’s scrimmage will tell a lot about who the starter could be. Expect Smith & Co. to evaluate the QB’s based off of tomorrow’s scrimmage, but I wouldn’t anticipate the coaches naming a starter before Monday of Oklahoma St. game week.

2. Defensive Line: Throughout all of fall practice, the defense has shown improvement over last year. However, that still has to translate into games. A sign of light is that the defense held the offense to five straight three-and-outs during last Saturday’s scrimmage. With Addison Gumbs being a full go tomorrow, watch for various rotations and groups playing together tomorrow, and who is most disruptive. I believe the defensive line positions are still pretty open, and the second team definitely has spots for grabs. James Rawls, Cody Anderson, Lamone Williams, and others have been rotating frequently, and should see plenty of action. Making an impact tomorrow is key to seeing increased playing time.

3. Secondary: The second starting corner opposite Isaiah Dunn seems to be wide open. Kaleb Hayes, Jojo Forest, Akili Arnold, Alex Austin, and Nashon Wright have all seen time running with the ones. Tomorrow will be key as to who can prove to be a lockdown corner the Beavs have been searching for for some time. Additionally, if Jalen Moore doesn’t play tomorrow, Omar Hicks-Onu and Jeffrey Manning Jr’s reps at safety will be important with David Morris approaching full strength. Morris should take reps at safety tomorrow, adding another wrinkle to this secondary. With the youth and injuries, coach Blue Adams will have a lot to evaluate after tomorrow.
