Day 11 Practice Nuggets

After multiple practices in Reser Stadium, the Beavs were backs at Prothro Field today. It was much hotter than it has been the last few days in Corvallis, with just a slight breeze. OSU was back in shells—helmet, shoulderpads, and shorts—after practicing in full pads yesterday.

It was a much lighter day today, with more drills and less team work. From the team work that did take place, here’s a look at the first team offense.

QB: Jake Luton/Tristan Gebbia
RB: BJ Baylor
WR: Isaiah Hodgins
WR: Tyjon Lindsey
WR: Champ Flemings
TE: Noah Togiai /Isaiah Smalls
LT: Blake Brandel
LG: Gus Lavaka
C: Nous Keobounnam
RG: Clay Cordasco
RT: Brandon Kipper

The offense was solid again in limited team work. Tristan Gebbia was sharp once again, completing mostly quick throws and shorter passes.

Gebbia’s first highlight came on a post route to I’Shawn Stewart. Stewart had a step on his defender, and Gebbia dropped him the ball right in stride for a big gain.

Aaron Short and Gebbia were in sync once again today. Gebbia found Short on a slant to beat the blitz. On the next play, he found Short on another slant route, with cornerback Nashon Wright quickly closing in. Short was able to hold on for the completion.

Gebbia’s longest pass of the day was a touchdown to an uncovered Luke Musgrave. A miscommunication on defense allowed Musgrave to get behind the defense for a score.

Artavis Pierce saw some team reps today, and caught a nice swing pass out of the backfield for a handful of yards. It was good to see Pierce back to working through drills today.

Overall, Gebbia was very sharp on his shorter (5-10 yard) passes, and has developed good timing with his receivers. This is not a knock on Luton, rather showing how quickly Gebbia is coming along in Lindgren’s system.

Jake Luton also looked good today, in what seems is a close QB race. Saturday’s scrimmage should tell more about how close the QB battle actually is.

Luton found Isaiah Smalls on a 10-yard in route through traffic. Smalls did a good job holding onto the ball as he was hit as he caught it.

Isaiah Hodgins continues to impress through fall camp, as he caught a nice comeback route from Luton. Hodgins’ big body combined with his improved footwork—as Lindgren noted post-practice—are a lethal combo for the junior receiver.

Andre Bodden continues to impress as the Beavers flex their depth at receiver. Today, Bodden’s entire body was practically out of bounds, but he managed to keep one foot in with possession on the out route. Bodden and Short have been key contributors with the second team offense.

Another standout on the second team today was Job Dockery. Dockery made a one-handed catch during one-on-one drills in tight coverage. Dockery, Short, and Bodden provide important depth to the offense.

Nick Moore had a nice hookup with Rweha Munyagi Jr. with the third team. Moore found Munyagi on a post route, and Munyagi was able to hold onto the ball as he was hit.

One thing that stuck out to me today was how fast Tyjon Lindsey’s feet are. Lindsey consistently chops his feet rapidly before he cuts, allowing him to gain an extra step on DBs. Lindsey has constantly been able to create separation throughout camp, but hasn’t seen as many targets as other receivers.

To the Defense... Here’s a look at today’s first-team D.

DE: Isaac Hodgins
DT: Elu Aydon
DE: James Rawls
OLB: Hamilcar Rashed Jr.
ILB: Shemar Smith
ILB: Avery Roberts/Doug Taomoelau
OLB: Andrzej Hughes-Murray
CB: Isaiah Dunn
S: Akili Arnold
S: Omar Hicks-Onu
CB: Alex Austin/Nashon Wright
Nickel: Jaydon Grant

James Rawls started the defense off hot with a would-be sack on Luton. Rawls has been emerging as a strong candidate for increased playing time, and showcased himself early today.

Cody Anderson was one of the first defensive linemen to rotate in today, and made two consecutive stops on the backfield. Granted he wasn’t working against Lavaka and Brandel on the left side, but it was impressive nonetheless.

Matthew Tago saw action at outside ‘backer early on, and beat Joshua Gray off the edge resulting in a tackle-for-loss. Tago received important reps last year, which should put him ahead of the curve going into this season.

Isaac Garcia is making a smooth transition to outside linebacker. He looked solid in pass coverage versus the tight ends, allowing only one completion in three reps. Garcia also had a forced fumble, and then recovered the ball during the team session.

David Morris worked in 7-on-7 today with the third-team defense. Morris is working his way back to full speed, but it was nice to see him get some team work today. Morris was a full go in all drills as well.

Shawn Wilson seems to have found a niche at the nickel position. Wilson forced another pass breakup today, and it seems he has at least one per practice. Wilson and Jaydon Grant are the two frontrunners for the starting nickel position.

Speaking of Grant, he made a solid defensive play stripping the ball from Champ Flemings as he came across the middle. Noah Togiai recovered the fumble, but to see the defense getting closer to forcing more turnovers is encouraging.

There was another fumble, this time on the exchange between Luton and Calvin Tyler Jr. Isaac Hodgins recovered the fumble, and returned it to the opposing 20-yard line before he was run down by Togiai. Tim Tibesar has stressed that this group needs to create more turnovers, and it shows on the practice field.

Special Teams: Choukair went 2-for-3 today, with his lone miss coming from 53 yards. Scarton made his only kick from 32 yards.

Tyjon Lindsey, Trevon Bradford (no pads on today), Jesiah Irish worked on one field catching punts from a machine. On the opposite field, it was Artavis Pierce, Taron Madison, Champ Flemings, Calvin Tyler Jr., and (surprisingly to me) Jack Colletto fielding kicks. I would assume Smith and Jake Cookus can choose any combo of these guys to return kickoffs and punts, and they rotated return guys last year.

Tyjon Lindsey caught one punt behind his back first try. Doesn’t count for anything, but it looked pretty cool, and highlights his hand-eye coordination.
