Day 1 of Fall Camp is in the Books!
FALL CAMP HQ
WATCH: Jonathan Smith breaks down Day 1
WATCH: Practice Highlights
- With the Oregon summer sun is full effect, the Oregon State football team hit the Prothro Practice Fields on Thursday afternoon, kicking off the second camp under head coach Jonathan Smith. With the Beavers being in shorts, there wasn't a ton of 11-on-11 or even 7-on-7 work, but still, the Beavers managed to show us quite a bit.
- While today's practice was largely made up of the drills that you can see here, the Beavers still managed to work a little bit of team work in.
- Quarterback Jack Colletto, who Smith said would be spending some time at linebacker this fall, was with the linebacking corps throughout the first day. Given Colletto's size and physical play style, this could be a good way to keep him fresh in terms of playing time. While the Beavers certainly won't go away from any Wildcat packages with Colletto, it's clear that the team wanted to give him reps at a position where he can make a more consistent impact. While I didn't see a ton of him today, when I did, he looked right at home with the 'backers.
- It was nice to see Jackson Chryst and Nick Moore get some of the QB reps behind Jake Luton and Tristan Gebbia. Moore, who has impressed the coaching staff in previous camps, struggled with command and execution but still showed solid decision making. Chryst on the other hand, looks like he's much older than a true-freshman. At 6-foot-2, 203 he already boasts a solid physique and I was impressed with his throwing ability and decision making.
- Speaking of the quarterbacks, both Luton and Gebbia had solid days. Luton was the first quarterback to receive reps and largely spent his time with the 1's while Gebbia primarily worked with a mix of the 1's and 2's. There wasn't a lot in terms of live work to really separate either of these guys, so look for more concrete news in the coming practices.
- Speaking of Luton, he told the media on Wednesday that his biggest goal in the offseason was getting into better shape to be able to more freely move about the pocket, and if day one was any indication, he put in a lot of work in the summer. While Luton isn't going to be tucking it and running often, he showcased a newfound skillset today in being able to roll better out of the pocket and extending the play. There were a couple times that he "fake" pulled the ball on the zone-read and managed to get around the edge rather quickly. Luton is easily a step or two faster than where he was in the spring.
- Noah Togiai looks as healthy and physically present as I've seen him during him time at OSU. The last time that I feel Togiai was this confident on the field was heading into the 2016 season when he was coming off a solid true-freshman campaign. He and Luton/Gebbia hooked up multiple times throughout the day on tight end curls and go-routes. Keeping Togiai healthy and on the field could be a huge x-factor for the OSU offense in 2019.
- While Smith noted post-practice that today's rotations were heavily in motion and that there's still a lot to be determined before 1st and 2nd units are established, here's what I saw in terms of first team offense and defense.
1st Offense
QB - Luton/Gebbia
RB - Jefferson/Artavis Pierce
WR - Isaiah Hodgins
WR - Tyjon Lindsey
WR - Kolby Taylor/Champ Flemings/Jesiah Irish
TE - Togiai, Teagan Quitoriano, Isaiah Smalls
LT - Blake Brandel
LG - Gus Lavaka
C - Nous Keobounnam
RG - Clay Cordasco
RT - Brandon Kipper
1st Defense
DE - Isaac Hodgins
DT - Elu Aydon/Jordan Whittley
DE - Jeromy Reichner
OLB - Andrzej Hughes-Murray
ILB - Shemar Smith
ILB - Avery Roberts
OLB - Hamilcar Rashed
CB - Kaleb Hayes/Shawn Wilson
S - Omar Hicks-Onu
S - Jalen Moore
CB - Isaiah Dunn
- Wide Receiver Trevon Bradford, who Smith confirmed on Wednesday wouldn't be available to start fall camp, was in a walking boot on his left foot on Thursday. While Bradford was sporting a big smile throughout the day, you could tell he was itching to be out there. Smith noted on media day that it wasn't anything serious and that the Beavers were being uber-careful with their prized receiver. We'll continue to monitor his status in the coming practices.
- Newcomer Nashon Wright might have had the top defensive play of the day as during 7-on-7 work, he went stride for stride with Oregon State's fastest receiver (Irish) and put himself in perfect position to knock away a beautiful placed Luton pass. The play caught the attention of Smith as post-practice, he lauded Wright's playmaking ability and was throughly impressed with his ability to cover in space. If Wright is already making an impact on day one, I love the potential for him moving forward.
- Isaiah Dunn looks really really good. There were probably 3-4 passes that he helped break up on Thursday, in addition to being very physical at the point of attack. He's one of the leaders in the secondary and he'll be counted on a lot.
- With Bradford on the shelf, the third receiver spot with the 1st team was largely up for grabs, and if there was one guy who was the most impressive with his reps with the 1's today, it was Kolby Taylor. He hooked up with Luton and Gebbia 3-4 times for completions throughout the live work and showed that he's really grown as a receiver in terms of his hands, footwork, and chemistry with the QB's.
- New center Nathan Eldridge largely spent time with the second unit on day one. Given that Eldridge was brought in to be "the guy", look for him to slide up to the first unit in the coming days. It's early, but he looks really comfortable and at home with Jim Michalczik and Co. up front.
- Speaking of the secondary, redshirt-freshman cornerback Kitan Oladapo made several really nice plays. Whether it was being in the right position for a pass breakup, or coming up to stop the run, the Happy Valley native had himself a solid day. Our very own @Mitch Monge has been high on Oladapo for some time, so he'll likely be the happiest to hear he had a very productive first day
- While we didn't get to see a lot of live work, the limited parts that we did really showcased the increased production the Beavers will have up front. Having a bevy of bodies to rotate is obviously a huge plus, but seeing the Beavers have talented guys that can win battles on the d-line is a big step in the right direction.
- The Beavers are loaded at linebacker. Between Rashed and Hughes-Murray on the edges, and Smith and Roberts in the middle, the Beavers are looking very good here.
- Smith addressed Arkansas transfer LB Kyrei Fisher post practice, noting that he's likely going to have to sit out a few games before he's eligible. Smith said he didn't quite know the specifics yet, but that Fisher would miss the start of the season with an eligibility issue stemming from his previous stop.
