I've been giving a lot of thought to the season so far. Frankly I'm very disappointed we haven't been better. Particularly the defense. We just cannot stop the run at all and the pass defense is not much better.
The jury's out on Collins but I love his elusiveness and is arm strength is really quite good. Accuracy is another story but he has some tools that I believe are going to make him a good PAC 12 QB.
Recruiting is another positive we seem to be making some real inroads with quality kids. That's a big positive , in the end talent is what wins and we don't have enough of it but seem to have reason for optimism for the future.
Finally a few thoughts on our staff. Allow me a personal anecdote that I think may have some application here. I work in Private Equity. We buy broken and distressed companies, try to fix them and sell them several years later for a profit. I have been doing this for 12 years. Often the reason the companies we buy are distressed is because of mgmt. (Riley and staff). When that's the case I hire a new CEO. ( Anderson and co.). In my entire time doing this even the great CEO's need a minimum of one year to start to see the results. Most take two years. During that time I look for several things. All of which I think are applicable to our situation. A few of them.
Is the CEO smart
Does he have a plan and can we measure it. Progress is the key. It doesn't go from 0 to 60 overnight.
Is he assembling the right team, in this case staff and recruiting class'.
Is he candid and dealing with the issues. Brutal honesty.
Does he set high standards.
Does he bring solutions.
Is there a sense of urgency?
There are many more but when I think about the state of our program I tend to say yes when I grade Anderson and staff to this set of requirements. Maybe that's why I feel good about our direction in spite of the results.
Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. Go Beav's
