Finished a re-watch of the SDSU game and noticed a few alarming but correctable things in the passing game that I think the staff will be able to hammer home (they likely already have).
1.
- On the 1st INT of the year the initial thought was to blame DJ for a misplaced high ball or even to blame Ant for not making what would have been a tough but makeable catch. When you re-watch this play a couple things stand out.
1. This INT is on Anthony Gould. The DB is giving him 7-8 yards of cushion. Obviously on this play the route calls for a skinny post / slant. Its the WR job to recognize the coverage and adjust the route accordingly. There is a ton of open space here just beyond the 1st down marker and well in front of the waiting coverage.
2. Ant should have ran his route a few yards short into the vacant space. Instead he ran the route at the depth of the DB and right into waiting coverage. Wideout rule of thumb don't just run the route you are assign pre-snap, run the route at the proper depth and leverage to get open. The QB will adjust accordingly based on you being open.
2.
- Second Interception. Bad play design. Only 2 WR are in the route with the defense dropping 5 in coverage. Ben Terry chip blocks and is supposed to be an outlet option but doesn't advance far enough up field to ever be a threat. Silas has a step on his DB but Ant has about 2 steps on the post corner. Ball probably should have gone to Gould here.
3.
- 3rd and 10 bad route design again. This was a common theme this game. SDSU was continually bringing blitzes from the A & B gap so the middle of the field was open all day for slant and dig routes. Noga caught a 1st down on a slant but otherwise we saw too much of what we see here with both routes breaking toward the sideline. A bit of a failure to adjust to what the defense was consistently presenting which is a bit concerning to see from BL.
"Do not accept in victory what you would not in defeat." Lots to clean up both from a coaching schematics and player execution perspective heading into a game where we will need to be sharp to win.
