Oregon State Fall Camp Practice Highlights: Day 1
Jonathan Smith Talks Fall Camp Day 1

- Overall, the team emerged out of the offseason in pretty good health. It looked like both Isaac Hodgins and Alton Julian were limited during practice, but otherwise, it looked like a healthy group.
-First days are always really light. No pads, lighter drills, mostly just breaking a sweat. The position groups spent most of the day rotating around the field in light drills, aside from one seven-on-seven session and one 11-on-11 session.
-Our first look at the QB group shook out like this: Chance Nolan ran only with the first team and Tristan Gebbia ran with the second team, while Ben Gulbranson, Travis Throckmorton, and Dom Montiel ran with the third team on the far practice field away from our eyes. Iām really curious to get a look at the true freshmen as the fall progresses to see if someone can wow.
-We suspected it coming into camp, but Jonathan Smith confirmed during the post-practice scrum that the quarterback competition would be an open competition.
-If you were looking for a nugget about a quarterback taking a leap forward on day one, youāve come to the wrong place. Offenses are usually behind the defense at the start of camp, which was the case at Prothro today.
-The seven-on-seven period lended a couple of highlight-reel catches. Gulbranson rolled out to his right in the height of āpressureā and lofted on over the defense to Trey Lowe, who made a sick one-handed catch over his shoulder. Luke Musgrave also made a very difficult catch in traffic on a dot from Chance Nolan.
-Jack Colletto lined up in multiple places throughout the course of practice. The redshirt senior lined up at second-team linebacker, fullback, and a few reps at tight end.
-The 11-on-11 session was pretty stale. The quarterbacks struggled to get anything down the field beyond 10 yards. The defense stayed in their spots and didnāt really let anyone get downfield.
-Due to the QB struggles, we saw many running back targets out of the backfield. Freshman RB Damien Martinez struggled a bit in the pass game, dropping a couple of balls out of the backfield.
- Former Georgia Tech RB Jam (Jamious) Griffin got a couple of touches during the seven-on-seven period. Takeaway? He is one fast dude.
