Hey Edgers!

BUSY AND LONG Scrimmage today! Scrimmage was roughly 2:30 hours today, so TJ and I have a ton of content coming up this afternoon!

WATCH: Oregon State Breaks Down Scrimmage (DJ Uiagalelei, Damien Martinez, Kitan Oladapo)

NUGGETS
  • DJ Uiagalelei found the end zone three separate times leading the offense while he was in.
    • The first touchdown pass came on the first drive of practice, capping off a 12-play effort with a flare route to Damien Martinez for a 10-yard touchdown.
    • The second touchdown pass was a beauty. From the plus-45-yard line, DJ went play action from under center and found Rweha Munyagi Jr. leaking out wide open on a wheel route behind the second level. The junior QB had a bit of edge pressure in his face, but still put a lot on the pass to hit Munyagi in stride.
    • The third touchdown finished off another long drive, from the five-yard-line DJ found Silas Bolden on a WR screen that helped him scamper into the end zone untouched. The play to set it up even better, DJ lofted a high-arcing deep ball to Anthony Gould, dropping it right in the bucket.
  • Ben Gulbranson orchestrated a pair of touchdown drives, though both on a short field (started on the plus 25), with running back Jake Reichle hammering them both in on handoffs. Gulbranson made some good throws today, notably a few short-to-medium distance while rolling out, but also missed a highlight one and I think it's the miss that is the most notable. Anthony Gould was open between the safety and defensive back on the far sideline 30-ish yards down the field and Ben just overthrew him by about 5-7 yards...
  • Reichle got a ton of run today and looked very physical doing it. Reichle has not-so-quietly emerged as a quality backfield option with Jam Griffin no longer in the fold. He may be a walk-on, but he’s made some impressive plays in camp and is providing terrific depth/reps here in camp. He’s also showcased great ability with the ball in his hands as all three quarterbacks hit him as a receiving option out of the backfield, and on more than one occasion, Reichle trucked the first DB he saw. He’s a physical guy…
  • In terms of the quarterback rotations, they definitely moved the guys around a lot with DJ mixing with the 1’s and 2’s and the same for Gulbranson, while Chiles exclusively worked with the 3’s. DJ was the most effective quarterback today, but the rotation between the 1’s and the 2’s is still ongoing with those guys - Neither one ran exclusively with the 1’s or 2’s.
  • Speaking of walk-ons, credit to wide receiver Jeremiah Noga who managed to haul in some really good catches today. Noga is 6-foot-2 and adds good size to the group, and he’s proven to have some reliable hands. Hard to say if he’s going to work his way into the receiver mix, but he’s made some nice plays in camp.
  • Isaiah Newell flashed more mixing in with both units. The play that stands out the most is catching a dump-off in the flat, putting a nice juke on his defender, and rattling off 20 yards after the catch. He’s got really good hands and has showcased them numerous times this camp, he could potentially be the “receiving” guy in that mix…
  • Oregon State fumbled a couple of times today. Once by Newell, which Kord Shaw scooped and scored off of from 47 yards. The other one came from Gulbranson, who just dropped the ball in the pocket. Shaw showed great athleticism picking the ball up off the turf without breaking much of a stride and was able to coast into the endzone with several linebackers following him. Haven’t called Shaw’s name a ton in the ILB rotations here early in fall camp, but that play in particular really showcased his athleticism at the spot.
  • In terms of the tight ends, you can tell the Beavers are going to be utilizing those guys in different ways than we’ve seen in years’ past. We wrote in our notebook on Thursday that position coach Brian Wozniak said they could be 4+ deep this season and that they’d be looking to get creative… Today we saw a couple of the tight ends (Jermaine Terry & Jake Overman) lining up out wide, something we haven’t really seen a ton of.
  • Jonathan Smith said post-practice that we haven’t seen inside linebacker Mason Tufaga because he’s been dealing with an injury. No word on specifics, but Smith didn’t seem like he’d be out long-term.
  • One guy who got a good lick on Newell was Makiya Tongue, who flattened Newell on a run play. Newell is a big guy at 220 pounds and has added a significant amount of muscle to his frame, but Tongue had all the leverage on this particular play as he essentially leveled him to the ground. Tongue could be a sneaky good player at ILB, excited to see more of him.
  • Wanted to make a note on DL Isaac Hodgins - I really think this could be his best year as a Beaver. He looks equal parts fast and physical this camp and made several nice pressure plays from his DL spot.
  • It was a good day for the kickers. Everett Hayes missed from 35 to open practice but then nailed kicks from 46, 43, 37. Atticus Sappington missed a 46-yard kick wide left but made it from 40 and 45. Given that this is an area in need of improvement heading into the campaign, this was great to see.
  • Drew Chatfield and John McCartan registered sacks of Ben Gulbranson off the edge on back-to-back plays.
  • Freshman Zakiah Saez had his name called for the first time with the backups, showing some flash getting to Travis Throckmorton for the sack. Saez made a nice play on the opening day of camp as well, think his learning curve is going to be quicker than most. He’s got great size coming off the edge…
  • Freshman DT Quincy Wright also got in on the sack action of the third team, sacking Aidan Chiles for a five-yard loss. Wright’s another guy who we haven’t talked about a ton, but has made several nice plays in camp. He’s extremely physical, tough, and has nice size down on the DL.
  • OLB Tyree Blake had his first major standout play of fall camp as he recorded a sack of Chiles. Good to see the local product (Jesuit) getting in with the third team a little bit.
  • There were no interceptions of the top 3 quarterbacks. Throckmorton threw one to junior Arizona transfer Jaydin Young on a rollout that should’ve been a dump-off to the running back but ended up being forced into tight coverage downfield. Dom Montiel tossed one to freshman Andre Jordan.
