DAY 7 PRACTICE VIDEO

Interviews with Jake Cookus, Jesiah Irish, and Everett Hayes

For the first time this fall camp, the Beavers practiced inside Reser Stadium as Saturday’s scrimmage draws closer. Here’s everything you need to know from day No. 7 of camp.

  • It was a light practice, more on details than 11-11 today…
  • Today was the first full day of pads, so the emphasis of practice was in the trenches for goal line and red zone scenarios. The running backs were sure a fan of it, Damien Martinez and Jake Reichle each punched in an impressive TD run from 15 yards out.
  • Partnered with those touchdown runs was an improvement in the run blocking for the Beaver OL, especially the backup unit. Cannot say the same for some of the pass-blocking reps.
  • Everett Hayes missed his only field goal attempt from 34 yards, banging it off the right upright. Despite the miss, Hayes said after practice he was feeling healthy and confident, more like his 2021 self. He did disclose that he wasn’t fully healthy last year, and that affected him mentally. Atticus Sappington nailed his only kick from 31 yards out.
  • Alton Julian saw more action with the backups in 7-7 work as he works his way back. Anthony Gould saw the field in live action for the first time this camp, splitting out wide with the first team.
  • The struggles throwing downfield have been evident for Aiden Chiles in camp, and today (with my eyes) seemed like we saw frustration from the freshman. Brian Lindgren came over to coach the young QB every few throws, and the body language suggested that Chiles was a little frustrated with what he was seeing downfield. After practice, Chiles stayed out there while everyone else left the field to get some extra reps in. I know we all thought there was this outside chance that Chiles could compete for the job at the beginning of camp, but day after day we are seeing he still has a lot to learn.
  • With all the red zone and goal-line reps, the short-area burst for the defensive line and linebackers was put to the test. Saw redshirt junior Makiya Tongue make a really nice tackle on the goal line, same with fellow LB Easton Mascarenas-Arnold, and defensive linemen Sione Lolohea and Tavis Shippen teamed up for a TFL on the goalline. Throw in a sack for redshirt freshman Quincy Wright as well.
