NUGGETS
Another August morning, another day of Oregon State fall camp, as the Beavers take the field on campus for practice No. 6. Today was the first day with referees in attendance, as the team sharpens up for Saturday’s scrimmage. Here’s everything you need to know.
  • This was the best performance of redshirt freshman DL Takari Hickle so far in camp. His best play came on a misfire by the offense late in practice, DJ Uiagalelei pitching a ball to Isaiah Newell running around the right side of the formation, Newell bobbled the ball and put it on the turf. Hickle, like a heat-seeking missile was sitting right there to dive on the ball and rip it away from Newell, who tried to get it back.
  • That wasn’t the only negative play Hickle forced on the offense, he teamed up with John McCartan earlier to force an incompletion on DJ, each finding a lane around the edge to disrupt the long-developing play. Hickle then on the very next play blasted Newell on a downhill run through the B gap.
  • While Newell was on the wrong side of a couple of plays today, I still think the redshirt sophomore continues to put together a solid camp, looking more explosive by the day. Though, he couldn’t top what sophomore Damien Martinez did, finally breaking the first big run of camp, outrunning the linebackers down the sideline to his left before getting knocked out of bounds by Kitan Oladapo at the 5. Oh so close to punching it in.
  • To piggyback off of that, the run blocking was a little bit better today. Helps when guys are going to be less hesitant to hit each other
  • Back to the defensive line, that group continued to wreak havoc as an entire unit. Cory Stover showed some great burst getting around the edge and pushing the tackle (didn’t see who) back into the backfield to sack DJ. He did that again later in practice.
  • Tavis Shippen forced a TFL. Multiple guys pressured DJ into a back pedal, forcing the junior to ditch the ball as his arm was hit, right into the arms of redshirt freshman Kord Shaw for the interception.
  • Silas Bolden reeled in one of his spectacular catches going against Jaden Robinson. Ben Gulbranson underthrew a deep ball down the near sideline, Robinson was in perfect position and turned around only for the ball to bounce off his helmet, then swatted into the air for Bolden to dive for the ball and rip it out of Robinson’s bread basket for the touchdown.
  • The team got some light hitting in during the final 15 minutes or so, gearing up for a little bit more come Saturday’s scrimmage. With the referees in the fold for practice, I thought there would be a few more penalties, but for the most part, it was pretty clean for this time of year.
