BeaversEdge Breaks Down Practice No. 5

Practice Video

NUGGETS
Oregon State got back to the practice field for its fifth practice of fall camp. Here’s everything that happened today.

  • Early standout along the defensive line was Swedish freshman Thomas Collins, who showcased some outstanding short-area burst past the offensive line for a couple of pressures, on resulting in a TFL alongside Semisi Saluni. Not bad for a Nordic!
  • Didn’t see a whole lot of action from Damien Martinez, maybe a little bit more from Deshaun Fenwick, but the guy who really continues to pop is Isaiah Newell. Newell looks to have a huge role with the Jam Griffin transfer. He looks bigger and faster, gets around the edge with pretty good ease. On top of that, he looks much better wearing No. 9.
  • Based on what we’ve seen throughout the first five practices, with the loss of Jam Griffin, the Beavers are being very cautious with their top running backs. Martinez and Fenwick have been kept very fresh, leaving most of the action to Newell. However, the walk-on running backs are getting the lion’s share of the carries and I think that’s a very smart move from the coaching staff… Gavin Haines and Jake Reichle have been busy, credit to those guys for helping the depth in the room.
  • The Beavers welcomed two new additions to the program in Minnesota transfer DL Jacob Schuster and JC WR Jailen Holmes… Smith says he’s not yet sure if they’ll be eligible this season…
  • Was definitely impressed with the tight end room today, particularly Jake Overman. Overman has been mostly utilized as the main-blocking TE during his time in Corvallis, but we’ve seen him catch a few nice passes from DJ and Ben and really seems to have added that to his game. Cal transfer Jermaine Terry and Jack Velling have been impressive as well, as both are good route runners and are massive. Smith said post-practice he loves the versatility in the room and feels like they can do a lot this season…
  • Pretty clear-cut QB rotation. DJ Uiagalelei was with the first team and Ben Gulbranson was with the second. The scrimmage on Saturday could be an interesting barometer to see where the quarterbacks are roughly halfway through camp..
  • I’ll give it to Ben though, he was letting it rip today. Right off the bat within the first 15 minutes of practice starting, he showed off nice accuracy and touch downfield on a go ball to Jesiah Irish. Note, this was in the 2-minute offense as well, for a little bit of added pressure. Ben finished the drive off with a dart to Silas Bolden on a slant at the goal line to punch in the only touchdown of the day.
  • We saw a little bit of downhill running from DJ today, both in improvisation and called runs. He’s going to be pretty hard to stop once he gets running down the field. Also showed off some of his sideline-to-sideline speed getting around the corner on a scramble and picking up a handful of yards. Given his prowess running the ball at Clemson, I imagine he’ll be utilized on occasion. He’s quicker than you think when he gets going…
  • Everett Hayes knocked in his only kick of the day from 44 yards.
  • Redshirt sophomore Jack Kane showed some nice instincts on a corner blitz off the edge, catching Gulbranson off guard, before nearly throwing a pick.
  • Receiver Jeremiah Noga earned a shoutout from Jonathan Smith after practice and it was well-earned. The redshirt sophomore showed really good hands while getting quite a bit of run on the second team, some good bounce too skying in the air to snatch a ball away from DB Josiah Johnson.
  • The first-team defensive line continues to wreak havoc in the trenches, putting a bit of a smile on Jonathan Smith’s face when mentioning the job that James Rawls, Sione Lolohea and co. have done disrupting the rhythm of offense. The narrative that the Beavers are going to have a much more efficient pass rush and defensive line pressure is certainly holding up early in camp, which is a terrific sign for Trent Bray's defense...
  • Alton Julian got back out onto the field with the backups for some 7-7 work, even got his hands on a pass. As noted last week, still working back to 100%, but he’s progressing. Smith seemed confident about his status post-practice and Julian certainly passes the eye test. He was going full-speed side-to-side during 7-on-7 and doesn’t appear to have any limitations.
