NUGGETS
Oregon State was back at the Prothro practice fields for day No. 13 of fall camp. Here’s everything you need to know about practice today.
- More detail work today, as the team spent almost all of its live reps working in the red zone. Here are all the touchdowns that we got today.
- Jeremiah Noga created some separation on a bench route to the front pylon, reeling in a dart from DJ. Noga had two of them during that session.
- Freshman Zach Card ran a nice angle route to the back pylon, despite his small size, vacuumed in a nice loft from DJ
- Jermaine Terry has gotten a lot of praise for his speed, but we saw his size on display at the goal line. He was matched up with Noble Thomas Jr. and just out-jumped him to bring the ball down for the TD.
- If you read the nuggets from yesterday, I mentioned that Aiden Chiles really struggled with free rushers in his face. DJ showed his experience in that department, dodging a rusher off of play action and calmly finding Jake Overman for a touchdown.
- Ben Gulbranson found the end zone with his legs off of a QB draw after a couple of negative plays.
- Chiles also found the end zone on a QB run
- It’s been apparent that, for good reason, Chiles is still in the phase where when his first read isn’t open and the pocket breaks down, he’s going to scramble no matter what. He’s such a good athlete that he can get away with it, but that can get him in big trouble as well.
- Zach Card was extremely busy today, working at various points with the 1st and 2nd team rotations… He’s got great hands, lightning-quick speed, and seems to make really good catches when the ball is thrown his way. Definitely a freshman to keep an eye on, because I think he’ll factor into the rotation…
- Chiles, while largely inaccurate downfield again, wasn’t the only quarterback who made mistakes. DJ tried forcing a ball into a tight window that was tipped up by John Miller and intercepted by Akili Arnold, a rare downfield mistake for the junior who has taken great care of the ball so far this fall camp. DJ’s improved accuracy from spring to fall has been a major storyline this fall camp
- Jaden Robinson had a near-interception that he wasn’t quite able to take off the turf, settling and trapping the ball. The ball went off Silas Bolden’s hands and Robinson nearly made a great play…
- The Beavers worked heavily on kickoff and punting packages today too, with an emphasis on the blocking aspect of each. They went full speed, but special teams coordinator Jake Cookus was emphasizing the importance of proper blocking… Silas Bolden handled the kick/punt return duties, while Josh Green handled the punts and a machine handled the kickoffs.
- Running back Damien Martinez got a little bit of run during 7-on-7 work and 11-on-11 work near the goal line, but he and Deshaun Fenwick’s days were very limited. This continues to be a theme in camp, but a smart one in my opinion with the Beavers wanting to keep Martinez, Fenwick, and Isaiah Newell healthy.
- Speaking of running backs, a couple of nice runs for walk-on running back Gavin Haines… Have been mostly praising Jake Reichle this camp, but Haines broke through the middle for a couple of nice runs with the third team.
- Isaac Hodgins didn’t HAVE to show off how strong he is, but he did anyways on a bullrush where he nearly picked up Tyler Morano and threw him into Gulbranson for the sack. It was a pretty good day for the interior DL, Quincy Wright got his hands on an Aiden Chiles pass and got a pass deflection. It sounds repetitive, but this group continues to be the best unit on the field every day of fall camp.
- As we mentioned in our post-practice video breakdown, just because the D-line is looking good doesn’t mean the offensive line is a point of concern. There’s just depth and talent amongst that DL group that Jonathan Smith and Legi Suiaunoa just haven’t had until now. They’re primed for a big season…
- Saw a little bit more of a coherent unit today at times, but still a mix of first-team and second-team rotating in.
- Alton Julian, who went live with the third team for roughly 10-15 snaps, looked quite good… After an ACL injury, I like to see how quickly a guy is able to move side to side and how confident he plants his leg, and Julian looked great moving around and didn’t appear to have any limitations. My assumption would be he’ll start his reps with the third team, increase them steadily, and then presumably rise up the depth chart. I asked Jaden Robinson about him post-practice and he said he’s very excited to get Alton back into the secondary this season…
