DEFENSIVE TACKLE

With the Beavers losing three DTs following this season (Kyle Peko, Jalen Grimble, and N’Ali Robbins), it appears that there is a need for at least one in the class. Ideally, it would make sense for the staff to target one prep and one JUCO DT, but with limited scholarships available at this time, the Beavs might only look to take a jelly donut-type.

TARGETS

Boss Tagaloa (4* #12 DT #113 OVR #21 in CA)
6-3 303 lbs.
De La Salle HS Concord, CA

In May, Tagaloa released a top-12 consisting of Arizona, Arizona St., Cal, Michigan, Missouri, Ole Miss, Tennessee, UCLA, Utah, Washington and the Beavs. Around the same time, Boss told BruinSportsReport.com that he would like to visit every one of his final schools in an unofficial or OV capacity before making his decision on or around signing day. Currently, he has OVs set-up for Alabama, Michigan and UCLA, leaving two OVs open for the remaining schools in his top group. The Beavers do have a tradition with the De La Salle program, as former Spartan Sumner Houston is currently on the Beavers roster, with De La Salle alumni Dylan Wynn and Tyler Anderson having completed their eligibility last season. It will be an uphill battle for Tagaloa’s commitment, but if they can secure an OV they’ll have a shot.

Handsome Tanielu (4* #18 JUCO OVR 5.8 RR)
Committed to Utah 6-2 305 lbs.
Snow College Ephraim, UT

Just last week, Tanielu took to Twitter to announce that he was committing to the University of Utah. The #18 player in the nation at the JUCO ranks chose Utah over offers from Boise St. BYU, Fresno St., Houston, Kansas, Louisville, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma St., Penn St., Tulsa, Utah St., and the Beavs. There is reason to believe that the Beavers will continue to recruit Tanielu, with the relationship they have with the Snow College staff and the familiarity Tanielu has with a few members of the OSU staff. As part of the 2010 recruiting class coming out of high school in Hawaii, current Beavs coaches Kalani Sitake recruited Tanielu while he was at Utah. Also, while in high school, Tanielu was highly recruited by the former OSU staff, so he has a familiarity with the school as well. Coach Sitake and Coach K will have to stay in contact with Tanielu and hope for an in-season visit if they hope to poach Handsome, as he will be a December graduate with 3 years to play 2. With 3 DTs graduating after this season and a gap between Junior Tago and RS Freshmen Williams, Houston and Vakameilalo, there appears to be a need for a JUCO DT.

Lorenzo Neal (2* 5.4 Rivals Rating)
Committed to Utah 6-2 302 lbs.
St. Thomas HS Houston, TX

Neal recently named a top-4 of Boise State, Purdue, Utah and Oregon State. He has already unofficially visited all four of his top school in some fashion over the past year, so a decision could be made at anytime as he doesn’t necessarily need/want to take a whole bunch of OVs. He would like to study engineering. Neal’s father is former NFL fullback, Lorenzo Neal. Utah and Purdue appear to be the Beaver’s stiffest competition for Neal’s commitment.
UPDATE 8/10
Neal committed to Utah on August 10th. He appears to be solid with his commitment.

COMMITTED ELSEWHERE

Jake Saunders (3* 5.5 Rivals Rating)
Committed to Northwestern 6-3 275 lbs.
Loveland HS Loveland, OH

David Hood (2* 5.4 Rivals Rating)
Committed to Toledo 6-1 265 lbs.
Carol City HS Miami Gardens, FL
