So part of my ongoing frustration with Tibs is on multiple occasions he has said he doesn't use data or look at stats to make decisions. "I'm not really a numbers guy".... I think has been his exact statement when asked about even the most basic stats like 3rd down conversion % (GO FIGURE). . Now I'll be the first to admit that I am a data head. It's a large part of what I do for a living. not only using data to make key business decisions but also perhaps more importantly shifting company culture to do the same. With that being said data cannot be the only tool used to measure performance. So if you are going to be someone like Tibs who doesn't use or believe in data then you have to be keenly aware of the nuances and non data driven metrics that drive effective performance. The example being older school baseball managers who knew damm well that a guy on their team couldn't hit lefties. They knew this without ever needing to look at platoon splits because they were paying attention to every pitch and every outcome.
Tibs is not like old school baseball managers. There is some season long PFF data that is floating around in the Beaver Twitter verse that really brings to light the issues we saw against WSU. Before the game I said this game was worrisome because of Tibs propensity to leave Roberts and Speights in on coverage when the offense is in obvious passing downs. My preference was to play Julian in the box (in place of one ILB) and bring Hardge or Arnold in as an extra DB (in place of the other ILB). This observation was based on two things:
1. Watching highlights of the Coug games against USC and Cal. They both did this effectively and largely naturalized the Coug passing attack.
2. Watching every Beaver game twice for the last 2 years and knowing that Roberts and Speights are not good coverage linebackers. The old school baseball manager knowing style though. I didn't have any data to back up what the outcomes showed us until now.( I think)
Season long Coverage Grades: @Brenden Slaughter Please confirm if these are accurate:
* My guess is Austin's season long score was greatly impacted by getting abused by Drake London.
If this data is accurate.. What this means is that Tibs allowed two of the worst players in coverage in the entire conference to not only play all 71 snaps of a game that saw the opposing team throw 46 times AND he left them in when the offense was in empty backfield 5 wide sets for 21 of those pass plays. Meanwhile Julian, statistically our best player in coverage played half the time. Apart from that, Roberts 29.7 grade is like the worst I have seen especially for a player that is otherwise good. He should never be left in coverage. This is literally the definition of setting your team and your players up to fail. I know JS gave Tibs a vote of confidence in the O article this week but two things need to happen moving forward, since firing Tibs does not seem to be in the cards.
1. JS needs to take the initiative to incorporate data and analytics into the defensive side of the ball from a game planning perspective.
2. Tibs needs to be made aware of his defensive personnel's limitations by the position coaches (Blue, Bray, Legi). They need to be the old school baseball coaches for him. Since Tibs is clearly not watching every pitch and every outcome.
