Today was the first day of defensive availability for the Oregon State football team.

Practice Nuggets
  • Jake Luton was once again the first quarterback to take reps during the portion of practice open to the media. Luton again looked really comfortable in the pocket, and he really went through his progressions well.
  • I was asked yesterday on our message board if OSU was working on any zone read type stuff. Today I looked for it specifically and only saw it once or twice. I would say that Marcus McMaryion and Luton looked really comfortable with it today.

  • The defense really caught my eye today because of their aggressiveness. They were flying all around the field, and I would give them the edge on the offense today.

  • Speaking of that aggressiveness, Christian Wallace and Isaiah Hodgins got into a little bit of a scuffle near the end of practice that drew ooh’s and aah’s from the offense and the defense.

  • The Beavers were really emphasizing short, quick passes today. I could tell the emphasis was getting the ball out of the QB’s hands quickly.

  • The most impressive throw of the day was by Luton, as he launched the ball about 50 yards. It was an incomplete pass, but the arm strength by Luton was impressive.

  • Darell Garretson was the second quarterback to take reps today, however it was with the second team. Garretson looked solid working with the second unit, but he didn’t get a ton of reps.

  • McMaryion was the third quarterback to take reps, but it was with the first team offense. I also didn’t see a ton of him. He made a couple nice throws, but also threw a couple questionable balls.

  • QB’s: For the second straight day, I would have to give the nod to Luton over the other QB’s. For a guy who hasn’t had the playbook for more than a few months, he is paying the best of all of the QB’s. His arm strength, stature, and poise all remind me of former OSU quarterback Sean Mannion. The main difference between Luton and Mannion? Luton has much more mobility than Mannion. There were a few times where Luton felt the pocket collapsing and tucked it and ran.

  • I mentioned Wallace earlier, but he looked really good today with the second unit. His aggressiveness and playmaking ability will really help the Beavers this season.

  • Also worth noting: Gary Andersen was celebrating his 53rd birthday today. He was in very good spirits today.

  • Both Christian Wallace and Titus Failauga mentioned to me that it is a bowl game or bust for the Beavers this season. Wallace also mentioned that a bowl game is the bottom baseline and the Rose Bowl is the goal.
Quotables
Titus Failauga on his senior season...

“We are going to take that momentum from the Civil War, and use that to set the tone for this year. "We are focusing on more pass rush drills and techniques in order to increase our productivity on the d-line.”

Failauaga on the defense's energy and aggression...

"The energy is definitely there. We are trying to compete, because we aren’t trying to be at the bottom again, we are trying to make it to the top."

Kevin Clune on the scuffle...

“You don’t want it to be a waste of time and take away from practice. But you want guys to work hard and compete, and not take anything from the other guys, so it's good to see.”
